Book Description
Pitch (i.e., fundamental frequency FO and fundamental period TO) occupies a key position in the acoustic speech signal. The prosodic information of an utterance is predominantly determined by this parameter. The ear is more sensitive to changes of fundamental frequency than to changes of other speech signal parameters by an order of magnitude. The quality of vocoded speech is essentially influenced by the quality and faultlessness of the pitch measure ment. Hence the importance of this parameter necessitates using good and reliable measurement methods. At first glance the task looks simple: one just has to detect the funda mental frequency or period of a quasi-periodic signal. For a number of reasons, however, the task of pitch determination has to be counted among the most difficult problems in speech analysis. 1) In principle, speech is a nonstationary process; the momentary position of the vocal tract may change abruptly at any time. This leads to drastic variations in the temporal structure of the signal, even between subsequent pitch periods, and assuming a quasi-periodic signal is often far from realistic. 2) Due to the flexibility of the human vocal tract and the wide variety of voices, there exist a multitude of possible temporal structures. Narrow-band formants at low harmonics (especially at the second or third harmonic) are an additional source of difficulty. 3) For an arbitrary speech signal uttered by an unknown speaker, the fundamental frequency can vary over a range of almost four octaves (50 to 800 Hz).

LE SOUCIS DE CONVIVIALITE EN MATIERE D'INTERFACE HOMME-MACHINE PREDISPOSE DESORMAIS A L'UTILISATION D'UN CANAL DE COMMUNICATION DE TYPE VOCAL AVEC LES ORDINATEURS. DANS CETTE OPTIQUE, L'ETUDE ET LA MISE AU POINT DE MODULES DESTINES A ETRE INTEGRES DANS UN SYSTEME DE RECONNAISSANCE AUTOMATIQUE DE PAROLE DEVIENT INDISPENSABLE. LES DEUX APPROCHES, L'UNE GLOBALE ET L'AUTRE, ANALYTIQUE, SONT UTILISEES POUR BATIR LES DIFFERENTS MODULES DU SYSTEME DESTINE A IDENTIFIER DES COUPLES CONSONNE OCCLUSIVE-VOYELLE. LA TECHNIQUE GLOBALE REPOSE SUR L'UTILISATION DE L'INFORMATION SPECTRALE EXISTANT SUR UNE ZONE DE TRANSITION CONSONNE-VOYELLE APPELEE PIVOT. CETTE METHODE MET D'AUTRE PART EN UVRE UNE TECHNIQUE DE RECONNAISSANCE DE FORMES ET DE COMPARAISON AVEC DES ELEMENTS TYPES CONTENUS EN MEMOIRE. L'APPROCHE ANALYTIQUE UTILISE DES CONNAISSANCES ACOUSTIQUES ET PHONETIQUES EXPRIMEES EN TERMES DE TRAITS. CES CONTRAINTES SONT APPLIQUEES A L'ANALYSE PAR L'INTERMEDIAIRE DE REGLES. LES RESULTATS RELATIFS AUX DEUX TECHNIQUES DE DECODAGE SONT ENSUITE CONFRONTES A L'AIDE D'UN MODULE DE COMPARAISON ET DE DECISION MIS AU POINT EXPERIMENTALEMENT ET INTEGRANT EN SUS DES CONNAISSANCES ACOUSTIQUES ET PHONETIQUES

Book Description
The invention of collage by Picasso and Braque in 1912 proved to be a dramatic turning point in the development of Cubism and Futurism and ultimately one of the most significant innovations in twentieth-century art. Collage has traditionally been viewed as a new expression of modernism, one allied with modernism's search for purity of means, anti-illusionism, unity, and autonomy of form. This book - the first comprehensive study of collage and its relation to modernism - challenges this view. Christine Poggi argues that collage did not become a new language of modernism but a new language with which to critique modernism. She focuses on the ways Cubist collage - and the Futurist multimedia work that was inspired by it - undermined prevailing notions of material and stylistic unity, subverted the role of the frame and pictorial ground, and brought the languages of high and low culture into a new relationship of exchange.

Book Description
Cause for jubilation: One of America’s wisest and most necessary voices has distilled what he knows about politics, broadly speaking, into one magnificent volume. Here at last are Henrik Hertzberg’s most significant, hilarious, and devastating dispatches from the American scene he has chronicled for four decades with an uncanny blend of moral seriousness, high spirits, and perfect rhetorical pitch. Politics is at once the story of American life from LBJ to GWB and a testament to the power of the written word in the right hands. In those hands, politics encompasses everyone from Jerry Garcia to Rush Limbaugh, every place from New Hampshire to Nicaragua, and everything from Playboy vs. Penthouse to Bush vs. Gore. Hendrik Hertzberg breaks down American politics into its component parts—campaigns, debates, rhetoric, the media, wars (cultural, countercultural, and real), high crimes and misdemeanors, the right, and more. Each section begins with a new piece of writing framing the subject at hand and contains the choicest, most illuminating pieces from his body of work. Politics is a tour of the defining moments of American life from the mid-’60s till the mid-’00s, a ride though recent American history with one of the most insightful and engaging guides imaginable, a writer who consistently makes us see more clearly and feel more deeply. “Politics is invaluable for all sorts of reasons—chief among them being decades of elegant writing in the service of surgical intelligence.”—Toni Morrison
