Excerpt from Recollections of a Civil Engineer: Experiences in New York, Iowa, Nebraska, Dakota, Illinois, Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado In June 1850, the writer commence] cng'neering on the Enlargement of the Erie Canal, in Wayne County New York. There was not a very large engineering force, the most of the work being in the villages of the county, and in building the new Clyde Lock, located about a mile west of the old one, and of the town; the lower or eastern level be ing lengthened that much. It was claimed at the time. That this change of location was to allow Gen'l William H. Ad ams to have the south end of his Sodus Canal at the lower level, but west of the old lock The old canal above the lock, which was five feet lift, was principally in cutting, as was most of the old Erie Canal. Near Clyde, the material was wasted in the rear of the towing-path which was there south of the canal, most of the town being on the opposite side. Preparatory to letting the contract for building this new piece of canal, test-pits were dug in this waste, show ing conclusively what kind of material was taken out in the construction of the old canal, but giving little intimation of what would be encountered in reducing the level five feet. Excerpt from Reminiscences of an Old English Civil Engineer, 1858-1908 Half a century of active and continuous employment in the various fields of civil engineering in parts of the world-wide British Empire and in the United States of North America may contain matters of interest to my old and young friends wheresoever they be. The twentieth and thirty-first of January, 1908, were two fiftieth anniversaries in my professional career. The latter date recalled the launching of the Great Eastern steamship at Mill Wall, on the Thames. I believe I am the only living engineer who had been employed by Mr. I. K. Brunel, her designer and builder, in his oflice, and witnessed her construction during 1854-5. I was not a witness of the launching ceremony in 1858, as I was then in India, engaged in the survey and staking out of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, which was to connect Bombay with Calcutta and Madras. C'yrus Field told me in 1871, in New York, that if he had not had the fortunate opportunity to charter this gigantic vessel for the laying of his perfected cable on the bed of the Atlantic Ocean in 1865-6, he could not have made such a success of it. We should realize that the laying of this cable was the most important international link and economic event between England and North America since the first discovery of America by John and Sebastian Cabot in 1497-8. England on this fiftieth anniversary had the opportunity of recalling to mind the great name and master - genius of one of her most famous civil engineers, who had during the first half of the last century designed and built the largest steam vessels - the Great Britain and the Great Western - for international commerce across the Atlantic Ocean. He, too, had had the foresight to realize the fact that growing population and increase of commerce in the future would require a broader width of gauge for railways than the ordi nary old wagon gauge of England. I was persuaded (after more than once declining) by my excellent friend Mr. Joseph Lewis, a leading director of that Company, to enter into a limited competition for their new terminus. I made my design while detained for several weeks with Mrs. Scott by the severe illness of our son Alwyne, at a small seaside hotel at Hayling in September and October, 1865. I completely worked out the whole design then, and made elevations to a large scale with details. It was in the same style which I had almost originated several years earlier, for the government offices, but divested of the Italian element. . The great shed-like roof had been already designed by Mr. Barlow, the engineer, and as if by anticipation its section was a pointed arch. I was successful in the competition, and the building has ever since been in progress, having been undertaken in sections, of which the last is now ordered. This work has been spoken of by one of the revilers of my profession with abject contempt. I have to set off against this, the too excessive praise of it which I receive from other quarters. It is often spoken of to me as the finest building in London; my own belief is that it is possibly too good for its purpose, but having been disappointed, through Lord Palmerston, of my ardent hope of carrying out my style in the Government offices, and the subject having been in the meanwhile taken out of my hands by other architects, I was glad to be able to erect one building in that style in London.
