Book Description
Excerpt from Reception Tendered by the Members of the Union League of Philadelphia to George H. Boker: Minister of the United States to Turkey, Friday Evening, December 22, 1871 Mr. George H. Broker's appointment by the President of the United States to the distinguished position of Minister to Turkey was everywhere recognized as a most well merited compliment, and the public announcement was received with unqualified approval. Among the members of the Union League, whose faithful officer he had been since the inception of the organization, the desire was universal to demonstrate in some formal manner the satisfaction felt at the honor conferred upon him, and at the same time to testify to the high personal esteem in which he was held by all associated with him. With this view numerous projects were discussed; and it was finally decided to tender to Mr. Boker an Evening Reception, the privilege of subscribing thereto being limited to members of the Union League; and the elegant quarters of the Association being selected as the proper place for the event.
