Water Quality Research Program: Recent Developments in the Analysis of Metals in Water, Wastewater, and Other Matrices
Author: Larry W. Jones
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 151
Book Description
The analysis of water, wastewater, sediment, and other matrices for the presence of metals has become a large proportion of the work requested from the typical analytical laboratory. Advances in sample preparation, analytical techniques, and equipment capabilities are occurring at a rapid pace. This report is intended to help the working analyst come to grips with the rapidly expanding numbers of methods and techniques for trace metal analysis. The advances in trace metal analysis have been made in two different areas that are the primary focus of this report: better instrumentation (including atomization, nebulization, optics, and data manipulation) and new and novel techniques of sample preparation (preconcentration, matrix removal, and dissolution). Theses topics are treated in Parts II and III, respectively. As detection limits get lower, contamination and loss of analyte during sample preparation and analysis become increasing significant. This subject is discussed in Part IV. Sources of interference in traec metal analysis, particularly in complex sample matrices that are becoming a larger percentage of the analyst's effort, are discussed in Part V. To aid the analyst with specific analytical problems, a comprehensive bibliography of pertinent literature from recent journals and periodicals is provided in Appendix A. Keywords: Analysis, Atomic absorption, Interference, Ion chromatography, Trace metals.

Trace Metals in the Environment
Author: Mario Alfonso Murillo-Tovar
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 1838803319
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 285
Book Description
The occurrence of heavy metals in the environment, even in traces, represents a severe risk for the ecosystems and can be dangerous to human health. However, a better understanding of the main aspects involved is still needed to reduce its negative impact on the environment and health. This book covers the recent methods used for the evaluation of heavy metal pollution and the identification of its sources, descriptions of some of the processes involved in its mobility and transport, attempts to address health and environmental effects of heavy metals pollution, and presents alternative technologies for its removal and remediation from environmental samples. Therefore, this book is recommended for experts in the comprehensive management of metal contamination in different environmental compartments.

Physicochemical Treatment Processes

Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1588291650

Languages : en
Pages : 731
Book Description
The past 30 years have seen the emergence of a growing desire worldwide to take positive actions to restore and protect the environment from the degrading effects of all forms of pollution: air, noise, solid waste, and water. Because pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste, the seemingly idealistic demand for “zero discharge” can be construed as an unrealistic demand for zero waste. However, as long as waste exists, we can only attempt to abate the subsequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. Three major questions usually arise when a particular type of pollution has been identified: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it available? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? The principal intention of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering series is to help readers formulate answers to the last two questions. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to specific pollution pr- lems has been a major contributing factor to the success of environmental engineering, and has accounted in large measure for the establishment of a “methodology of pollution c- trol. ” However, realization of the ever-increasing complexity and interrelated nature of current environmental problems makes it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems be undertaken.
