Recent Advances in Science and Technology of Materials

Pages : 423
Book Description
If an ion in a crystal is replaced by an impurity ion with a different charge, compensation for the charge difference must be accomplished. This is usually done by an intrinsic defect, i. e. a lattice vacancy or interstitial host ion, in such a way to balance the excess or deficit of charge. The introduction of cation vacan cies along with divalent cation impurities in alkali halides is a familiar example. If these crystals are carefully annealed, nearly all of the compensating defects migrate to the impurity ions to form impurity-defect complexes. It is the behavior of these complexes that are the principal concern in this paper. Almost invariably such complexes are dipolar in character, and when subjected to an electric or mechanical stress field, they will tend to realign to an orienta tion of lower energy provided the thermal activation is sufficiently great. If the complex consists of an impurity-vacancy couple, re orientation may occur either by the vacancy moving around the impu rity or by an exchange of positions of the partners. In general the activation energy for these two distinct reorientation paths is different. If the complex consists of an impurity-interstitial couple, interchange of positions is unlikely and reorientation is considered to occur exclusively by the motion of the interstitial around the vacancy.

Recent Advances in Technology Research and Education
Author: Dumitru Luca
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319674595
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 352
Book Description
This book presents selected contributions to the 16th International Conference on Global Research and Education Inter-Academia 2017 hosted by Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași, Romania from 25 to 28 September 2017. It is the third volume in the series, following the editions from 2015 and 2016. Fundamental and applied research in natural sciences have led to crucial developments in the ongoing 4th global industrial revolution, in the course of which information technology has become deeply embedded in industrial management, research and innovation – and just as deeply in education and everyday life. Materials science and nanotechnology, plasma and solid state physics, photonics, electrical and electronic engineering, robotics and metrology, signal processing, e-learning, intelligent and soft computing have long since been central research priorities for the Inter-Academia Community (I-AC) – a body comprising 14 universities and research institutes from Japan and Central/East-European countries that agreed, in 2002, to coordinate their research and education programs so as to better address today’s challenges. The book is intended for use in academic, government, and industrial R&D departments as a reference tool in research and technology education. The 42 peer-reviewed papers were written by more than 119 leading scientists from 14 countries, most of them affiliated to the I-AC.

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Lifetime and Reliability
Author: Nigel Brandon
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0128097248
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 235
Book Description
Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Lifetime and Reliability: Critical Challenges in Fuel Cells presents in one volume the most recent research that aims at solving key issues for the deployment of SOFC at a commercial scale and for a wider range of applications. To achieve that, authors from different regions and backgrounds address topics such as electrolytes, contaminants, redox cycling, gas-tight seals, and electrode microstructure. Lifetime issues for particular elements of the fuel cells, like cathodes, interconnects, and fuel processors, are covered as well as new materials. They also examine the balance of SOFC plants, correlations between structure and electrochemical performance, methods for analysis of performance and degradation assessment, and computational and statistical approaches to quantify degradation. For its holistic approach, this book can be used both as an introduction to these issues and a reference resource for all involved in research and application of solid oxide fuel cells, especially those developing understanding in industrial applications of the lifetime issues. This includes researchers in academia and industrial R&D, graduate students and professionals in energy engineering, electrochemistry, and materials sciences for energy applications. It might also be of particular interest to analysts who are looking into integrating SOFCs into energy systems. - Brings together in a single volume leading research and expert thinking around the broad topic of SOFC lifetime and durability - Explores issues that affect solid oxide fuel cells elements, materials, and systems with a holistic approach - Provides a practical reference for overcoming some of the common failure mechanisms of SOFCs - Features coverage of integrating SOFCs into energy systems

Physics, Chemistry and Technology of Solid State Gas Sensor Devices
Author: Andreas Mandelis
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 9780471558859
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 354
Book Description
Research and development of solid state gas sensor devices began in the 1950s with several uncoordinated independent efforts. The number and pace of these investigations later accelerated in response to increasing pressure placed on the environment and public health by industrial activities. Since 1970, several thousand articles have been written on the subject, and laboratories around the globe have introduced novel methodologies and devices to address needs associated with particular technological developments. Despite the rapid development of this important new technology, very little has been done to review and coordinate data related to sensor science and technology itself. Physics, Chemistry and Technology of Solid State Gas Sensor Devices focuses on the underlying principles of solid state sensor operation and reveals the rich fabric of interdisciplinary science that governs modern sensing devices. Beginning with some historical and scientific background, the text proceeds to a study of the interactions of gases with surfaces. Subsequent chapters present detailed information on the fabrication, performance, and application of a variety of sensors. Types of sensor devices discussed include: Gas-sensitive solid state semiconductor sensors Photonic and photoacoustic gas sensors Fiber optic sensors Piezoelectric quartz crystal microbalance sensors Surface acoustic wave sensors Pyroelectric and thermal sensors For analytical chemists using solid state sensors in environment-related analysis, and for electrical engineers working with solid state sensors, this book will expand and unify their understanding of these devices, both in theory and practice.
