Book Description
"He's waiting for you!" With this enigmatic invitation, the Traveler finds himself swept into a world that is completely alien, yet strangely familiar. He is told that he will be returning home, yet this new world is inhabited by elves, trolls, and centaurs. Everything has changed! Magic, mysticism, and superstition seem to hold more power here than logic and rationality. And a disturbing truth emerges; human history is being deliberately rewritten to disguise an invasion by rebels from another dimension intent upon harnessing humanity to their will. Opposing them is the sovereign government from this same dimension, whose leadership will not become directly involved in the struggle on Earth. Humans must be recruited, then trained to resist this ominous distortion of history. Given the assistance of two extraordinary companions and a magical pendant, the Traveler is told to recover an item lost in the conflict since antiquity, an integral part of a much more powerful mechanism, the First Jewel of Earth. You will find yourself challenged to place this book within conventional categories. Is this fiction, fantasy, or prophecy? Is this story set in the distant past or the emerging future? Is it possible that two alien forces have been struggling for control of human history since the beginning of time? Join the Traveler in pursuing this quest. Like him, your reality will be forever changed!

Book Description
This is a personal record. But it is not so much an autobiography as it is a recalling of the people and events and ideas that made an impact on Jim Garland one way or another, helping him to construct an understanding of the world into which he happened to be thrown by accident of birth. He lived through times that deserve hurlyburly adjectives -- roiled, convulsive, tumultuous. From first-hand experience he knew about hunger, violent death and injury in the mines, strikes, blacklists, murderous gun thugs, clandestine meetings, fear, Red-baiting, desperate poverty, the Great Depression in all its infamy. He speeaks here not as a scholar but as a survivor. Others can write of these same times with much greater omniscience, with olympian detachment or with passionate outportings of theory buttressed by long hours in the library. This is a different kind of record entirely.

Book Description
This short book engages the myriad dimensions of Night, through ancient rituals, medieval storytelling, modern philosophy, and futuristic images, in order to explore the human experience of the after-dark. It thereby tracks Night through the prisms of its most fascinating practitioners: namely, those who keep strange hours and navigate the various potentialities of nocturnal experience (both of terror and enchantment). The Thief’s Night; The Runaway’s Night; The Drunkard’s Night; The Insomniac’s Night; The Revolutionary’s Night; The Lunatic’s Night; The Sorcerer’s Night. Undoubtedly, each of these conceptual figures provides a unique gateway into understanding the powerful sensorial effects of evening, as well as its vast connections to larger questions of time, space, fear, nothingness, desire, death, forgetting, vision, secrecy, criminality, monstrosity, and the body.

Book Description
"You were once given a helmet." "A helmet?" The Traveler thought for a long moment. "Yes, Soterion-the defender," he affirmed. "You must learn to wear it in battle," instructed the Preacher. "You take so many blows to your soul because your intellect is open to the enemy." "When am I in battle?" Ishi shook him gently. "Every day is a battle, Traveler! Take every thought captive, remember? Salvation is forever, and yet the need for it occurs in the daily battlefield. You must work it out with reverential fear and trembling. Wear your helmet, Traveler!" Fourth in the Jewels of Earth saga, this novel sends the Traveler careening through human history, searching for the mysterious Omnipoint. He must find it! His supernatural guardian has warned him that beyond was only utter and eternal darkness. Meanwhile, the black magic of the Cabala is distorting reality around him, humanity is dominated by animal compromises, and his immortal enemies seek his life. Is the beautiful unicorn shadowing his every move a fellow traveler or a dangerous deception? How can any of this be human history-his history-your history? Wear your helmet, Traveler!

Book Description
A history of the postal system that once connected the Ottoman Empire Before the advent of steamships or the telegraph, the premier technology for long-distance communication was the horse-run relay system. Every empire had one--including the Ottoman Empire. In The Sublime Post, Choon Hwee Koh examines how the vast Ottoman postal system worked across three centuries by tracking the roles of eight small-scale actors--the Courier, the Tatar, Imperial Decrees, the Bookkeeper, the Postmaster, the Villager, Money, and the Horse. There are stories of price-gouging postmasters; of murdered couriers and their bereaved widows; of moonlighting officials transporting merchandise; of neighboring villages engaged in long-running feuds; of bookkeepers calculating the annual costs of horseshoes, halters, and hay; of Tatar couriers and British travelers sharing drunken nights at post stations; of swimming with horses across rivers; and of hiding from marauding bandits in the desert. By weaving together chronicles, sharia court records, fiscal registers, collective petitions, appointment contracts, and imperial decrees from the Ottoman archive, this study of a large-scale communications infrastructure reveals the interdependence of an empire and its diverse imperial subjects. Koh traces this evolving interdependence between 1500 and 1840 to tell the history of the Ottoman Empire and its changing social order.
