Book Description
Excerpt from Readings in American History The text-book American History, written for the use of high schools by A. H. Sanford and myself, includes, as a portion of the bibliographical material connected with each chapter, Readings in American History. The present volume is the fulfillment of the promise that a limited number of sources would be collected which might be suitable for collateral reading. I am convinced, from my own experience as teacher in the secondary schools, that the judicious use of such material adds life and reality to historical study. In making the selections I have constantly kept in mind that pupils of high-school age are ordinarily but slightly interested in constitutional documents. A relatively large number of the extracts have been taken, therefore, from the journals and letters of persons who were contemporary with the events described. Books of travel have likewise been drawn upon extensively. Topics have been chosen in the various fields of human activity, political, industrial, social, educational, and religious, but, in general, more extended selections, from fewer sources, have been made than has heretofore been usual in similar collections. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

Book Description
Excerpt from Readings in the History of the American Nation It is now common in all schools to require pupils to prepare papers on assigned topics or to do a certain amount of reading in addition to the lesson in the text-book. There appears to be no difference of opinion among teachers concerning the value of this collateral reading and study: it releases the pupil from bondage to the text, widens his view, and gives him training in the handling of material. There are often, however, difficulties in obtaining books to be used in this way, and it is especially difficult to get books covering a large portion of the field; moreover, even when a school is provided with a reference library, the illustrative material is not always found without unreasonable effort. This volume of selections is not offered in expectation that it will entirely take the place of the school library in American history, but with the hopes that it will be of service where schools are not possessed of reference books and that in any case the selections will wisely amplify and illuminate the text-book and will make it possible to require a certain amount of work outside the text without placing unnecessarily heavy burdens on the pupil. Even if these selections are not used as the basis of definite oral or written reports, the pupils will, it is to be hoped, find them interesting and readable. This volume does not pretend to be a thoroughly balanced presentation of materials on American history, a volume in which each portion of the field receives its just and adequate share of attention; such a thoroughly balanced volume may be desirable, but a book like this, intended to be used in connection with a text-book, rather than independently, need not be so formidable in its content or so precise in its disposition of space. Book Description
Excerpt from Historical Readings Illustrative of American Patriotism MY young friends, - I have many interesting stories to tell you of American patriotism and love for the flag of our country. It stirs our blood to read of those who risked their lives, and who, in many instances, died for the honor of that glori ous emblem, the most beautiful that floats in the sunlight Of heaven. Your eye kindles and your heart swells when you look upon the star-span gled Banner, and I am sure that, as you read what I have to tell you about it, your patriotism will become more glowing, your love for that flag deeper, and your devotion to your country more profound than before. But in order that these stories Shall be clear to you, you must first learn the history Of the period to which they relate; and since we are to begin by speaking Of the colonial days, that is, when our country was in its infancy, we will first take up the history Of the colonial times. Book Description
Excerpt from Readings in the Economic History of the United States The need of providing large college classes with collateral reading in a course on the economic history of the United States has led to the preparation of this book. Its purpose has therefore been pri marily to provide a sufficient body of material to supplement the more systematic text book and lectures. This material has, with only one or two exceptions, been drawn from contemporary sources; in the later periods, with the growing wealth of such material, Official documents have been largely used. But in every period these documents have been supplemented by the more human and the more illuminating comments of travelers, Observers, and others who were entitled to speak authoritatively. Where controversial matters have been treated, every effort has been made to present both sides fairly. In the face of the great amount of material available for such a work as this the main task of the editors has necessarily been one of selection, and in performing this task they have endeavored to present a comprehensive yet balanced picture of the economic activities and development of each period. Agriculture, manufactures, tariff, com merce, transportation, money and banking, labor, and the movement of the population have, each in turn, been given due emphasis in the panoramic picture here unfolded. AS among the different periods it is believed that a balance has been maintained that will commend itself to teachers of American history. TO the period from 1600 to 1808 about one fourth of the book is devoted; one half to that from 1808 to 1860; and the remaining fourth to the period since the Civil War. Book Description
Excerpt from Reader for Coming Americans: Readings and Language Lessons in History, Industries and Government The millions of foreign-born in America, if they are to love this country, must know that the country is worth loving. The definition of the Republic, A government of the people, by the people and for the people, conveys no meaning to the alien unless he is shown how the people rule. To sing, The land Of the free and the home of the brave, is not enough; it must be accompanied by a rehearsal of some of the deeds of the free and the brave. The foreign-born can only learn by systematic teaching that America has a form of government well calculated to reflect the needs of the people; that our courts of justice guarantee to each man the fruits of his labor; that civil and religious liberty IS enjoyed by all who dwell under the shadow of the stars and stripes. These facts are a gospel of glad tidings to millions of immigrants. They come hoping for great things; it remains with us whether or not they shall realize their hope. A government dependent upon militarism and bureaucracy can afford to ignore the ignorance and illiteracy of its subjects; a democracy cannot. Our brother immigrant needs education, and when he understands that justice and truth, free dom and liberty, rights and duties, are necessary in a democracy, he will help to preserve them.
