It is a companion volume to Zhou Mengdie: 41 Poems which presents many of Zhou’s most meditative poems in the original and in full translation, but can be read independently. This book shows how different reading strategies can help us to discern many-layered possible meanings in Zhou Mengdie’s dense but rewarding poetry. The first part, ‘Reading Zhou Mengdie,’ goes beyond the traditional labeling of Zhou as a ‘Buddhist’ poet. Discussing many examples in translation, Lloyd Haft shows that interpretation via formalist literary theory, Freudian dream psychology, or Husserlian phenomenology can be just as revealing. The second part, ‘On Translating Zhou Mengdie,’ demonstrates the surprising ways in which the translation process itself can be a fruitful key to parallel or alternative meanings.

The Taiwan writer Zhou Mengdie (1921) is one of the greatest living Chinese-language poets. His poems are full of Buddhist allusions which have earned him the nickname poet-monk, but as Lloyd Haft shows in this in-depth study, Zhou's remarkably cosmopolitan poems can be read equally well in the light of Freudian dream analysis, Husserl's phenomenology, and the theory of the palindrome and related literary forms. Public discourse on cultural identity was not possible on the island of Taiwan until martial law was lifted there in 1987. While until then culture had mainly been an arena for the suppressed political discourse, the demise of the oneparty reign of the Guomindang (KMT) at the end of the 20th century signified not only the transformation from an autocratic to a democratic system but also the end of the cultural hegemony of the mainlanders on the island. The transformation process paved the way for further cultural innovation, the keywords here being education reform, language debate, establishment of new academic disciplines, historiographic reconstruction etc. It has also led to a widespread discussion of a specifically Taiwanese cultural identity which is reflected in literature, language, art, theatre and film. This issue contains the verse of twenty-four poets. From 1924, when Hsieh Chun-mu first published four “Poems in Imitation,” the development of new poetry in Taiwan has a history of almost one hundred years. The roots of new poetry in Taiwan with its “twin flower bulbs,” to use the phrase coined by Chen Chien-wu, has now bloomed and borne fruit. It manifests diversified themes, and places great stress on both artistic expression and social concern. It recognizes globalization as the major trend of the times, and maintains a dynamic balance between nativist consciousness and the ensibilities of the Chinese cultural diaspora. Taiwan literature and its new poetry written in Chinese should have a place in the Chinese world community,as well as in the history of world literature. Limited by the space allowed for the journal, we could only select works related to “local” and “quotidian” writing. The Assassin tells the story of a swordswoman who refrains from killing. Hou Hsiao-hsien astonishes his audience once again by upsetting almost every convention of the wuxia (martial arts) genre in the film. This collection offers eleven readings, each as original and thought-provoking as the film itself, beginning with one given by the director himself. Contributors analyze the elliptical way of storytelling, Hou’s adaptation of the source text (a tale from the Tang dynasty, also included in this volume), the film’s appropriation of traditional Chinese visual aesthetics, as well as the concept of xia (knight-errant) that is embedded in Confucian, Daoist, and Buddhist worldviews.
