Collaboration has been a serious interest in the non-profit and for-profit sectors for years however, non-profits have yet to be totally successful in the execution of collaborative partnerships. These efforts, when executed accurately, have the imminent potential to accrue more clients, recognition and funding sources, while limiting program duplication as well as competition. The call for collaboration is being heard in various sectors across the United States from non-profit to for-profit. Michael Winer, a social architect and collaboration expert defines collaboration as "a mutually beneficial and well-defined relationship entered into by two or more organizations to achieve common goals. The relationship includes: a commitment to: mutual relationships and goals, a jointly developed structure and shared responsibility; mutual authority and accountability for success; and sharing of resources and rewards." This thesis demonstrates the reasons why collaboration has become important to the non-profits sector, especially in Chicago, noting changes in philanthropic giving that have made the resource pie available to Chicago non-profits smaller. The thesis demonstrates why collaborating rather than competing is one of the most influential and rewarding methods of progressive business today. Consequently, considering the size and effective ability through numbers alone of Chicago's non-profit arts sector, I assert that competition is undesirable during these economic times, and that actively working together and co-creating is better than failing alone or reproducing the same ideas time and time again. The aim of this thesis is to enumerate; collaboration instead of competition can be beneficial to the overall health of an organization as well as bolster innovative thinking and progress, all the qualities that philanthropic foundations are looking for.
