Book Description
This book deals with the central theme of freedom to practise midwifery in selected countries of the world. Each chapter has a separate author who has specific knowledge of the country for that chapter either as a citizen or researcher. The underpinning theme of this book is the philosophy of best midwifery practice - particularly that which is evidence-based. To clarify the meaning of the term, the book includes an initial chapter that discusses the aims and realities of achieving 'best practice' - wherever in the world a midwife may be and under whatever circumstances she may be working.

Book Description
To practice effectively, midwives need to continually update their knowledge of pregnancy and birth. This fully revised and updated new edition of The Midwife's Labour and Birth Handbook is a practical and accessible guide to providing midwifery care while promoting 'women-centred' care and normality. It explores important questions such as: Why are women not encouraged to make a birth plan for elective CS? If a VBAC woman declines continuous CTG monitoring then why shouldn’t she use a waterbirth pool? If shoulder dystocia is anticipated, why not encourage all-fours birth in preference to a semi-recumbent position? Why are the needs of the delivering professional so often put before the advantages of upright postures for promoting descent of a second twin? This new edition incorporates the latest research and national guidelines, and includes new chapters on twins, caesarean section, bullying, risk management and IOL. By bringing together the latest midwifery information in a woman-centred way, The Midwife's Labour and Birth Handbook is an essential guide for both student midwives and experienced practising midwives.

Book Description
Midwifery is used to describe a number of different types of health practitioners, other than doctors, who provide prenatal care to expecting mothers, attend the birth of the infant and provide postnatal care to the mother and infant. Nurse-midwives also provide gynaecological care to women of all ages. Practitioners of midwifery are known as midwives, a term used in reference to both women and men (the term means "with the woman"). Most are independent practitioners who work with obstetricians when the need arises. They usually deal with normal births only but are trained to recognise and deal with deviation from the norm. If something abnormal is discovered during prenatal care, the client is sent to an obstetrician. Other midwives will deal with abnormal births, including breech birth. There are two main divisions of modern midwifery in the United States, nurse-midwives and direct-entry midwives. In the United Kingdom midwives are practitioners in their own right, and take responsibility for the antenatal, intrapartum and immediate postnatal care of women. In many parts of the world, midwives delivery far more children than doctors. This new book brings together the latest research on this ever-changing field.

Book Description
The evidence surrounding the skills and approaches to support good birth has grown exponentially over the last two decades, but so too have the obstacles facing women and midwives who strive to achieve good birth. This new book critically explores the complex issues surrounding contemporary childbirth practices in a climate which is ever more medicalised amidst greater insecurity at broad social and political levels. The authors offer a rigorous, and thought-provoking, analysis of current clinical, managerial and policy-making environments, and how they have prevented sustaining the kind of progress we need. The Politics of Maternity explores the most hopeful developments such as the abundant evidence for one-to-one care for women, and sets these accounts against the background of changes in health service organisation and provision that block these approaches from becoming an everyday occurrence for women giving birth. The book sets out the case for renewed attention to the politics of childbirth and what this politics must entail if we are to give birth back to women. Designed to help professionals cope with the transition from education to the reality of the system within which they learn and practise, this inspiring book will help to assist them to function and care effectively in a changing health care environment.
