Book Description
Joey wasnA[a¬a[t just afraid of rattlers, he was terrified. And on Rattlesnake Ranch they were everywhere A[a¬a under the cacti, in the weeds, between the rows of cotton. Joey almost always found one in the haystack when he fed the cows. It coiled like a garden hose come to life. The beady eyes stared out of a flat, ugly head. The snakeA[a¬a[s tongue darted in and out, and its tail blurred with motion. That buzzing sent chills racing up JoeyA[a¬a[s spine. If rattlesnakes bothered Joey, so did the A[a¬Askeleton in the closet.A[a¬A ThatA[a¬a[s what his step-mother called the family secret. She and Pa wouldnA[a¬a[t tell it to Joey, but he thought the A[a¬AskeletonA[a¬A had something to do with that young woman who haunted his dreams. Could she be his real mother? Joey had to find out. The only break from work came to Joey at church. Since his father was a deacon, the family attended every service. Brother BishopA[a¬a[s hell-fire sermons scared Joey almost as much as the rattlesnakes on the ranch. But Joey liked singing, Bible study, and being with Matthew. Matt was the preacherA[a¬a[s son and JoeyA[a¬a[s best friend. He didnA[a¬a[t even tease Joey about being afraid of rattlesnakes. Both boys enjoyed telling scary stories, horseback riding, and exploring forbidden places. But some things Joey had to discover for himself such as that dark family secret, A[a¬Athe skeleton in the closet.A[a¬A

Book Description
Anetso, a centuries-old Cherokee ball game still played today, is a vigorous, sometimes violent activity that rewards speed, strength, and agility. At the same time, it is the focus of several linked ritual activities. Is it a sport? Is it a religious ritual? Could it possibly be both? Why has it lasted so long, surviving through centuries of upheaval and change? Based on his work in the field and in the archives, Michael J. Zogry argues that members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation continue to perform selected aspects of their cultural identity by engaging in anetso, itself the hub of an extended ceremonial complex, or cycle. A precursor to lacrosse, anetso appears in all manner of Cherokee cultural narratives and has figured prominently in the written accounts of non-Cherokee observers for almost three hundred years. The anetso ceremonial complex incorporates a variety of activities which, taken together, complicate standard scholarly distinctions such as game versus ritual, public display versus private performance, and tradition versus innovation. Zogry's examination provides a striking opportunity for rethinking the understanding of ritual and performance as well as their relationship to cultural identity. It also offers a sharp reappraisal of scholarly discourse on the Cherokee religious system, with particular focus on the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation.
