Polarization in Spectral Lines
Author: M. Landi Degl'Innocenti
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402024150
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 899
Book Description
The scientific research based on spectropolarimetric techniques is undergoing a phase of rapid growth. Instruments of unprecedented sensitivity are nowadays available, particularly for solar observations. To fully exploit the rich diagnostic content of such observations, it is necessary to understand the physical mechanisms involved in the generation and transfer of polarized radiation in astrophysical (or laboratory) plasmas. After an introductory part based on classical physics, this book tackles the subject by a rigorous quantum-mechanical approach. The transfer equations for polarized radiation and the statistical equilibrium equations for the atomic density matrix are derived directly from the principles of Quantum Electrodynamics. The two sets of equations are then used to present a number of applications, mainly concerning the diagnostics of solar magnetic fields. This book is primarily addressed to scientists working in the field of spectropolarimetry. It may also serve as a textbook for a course at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level.

The Theory of Coherent Atomic Excitation, Multilevel Atoms and Incoherence
Author: Bruce W. Shore
Publisher: Wiley-VCH
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 984
Book Description
This book examines the nature of the coherent excitation produced in atoms by lasers, as well as the details of the transient variation of excited-state populations with time and how these depend upon such controllable parameters as laser frequency and intensity. It emphasizes the physical and mathematical theory that underlies contemporary description of this excitation. It is concerned with temporal behaviour rather than with the characteristic energy levels of the stationary status of atoms. In Volume 2, Part IV a variety of multi-state extensions of the simple two-state atom, beginning with three- state models and continuing to finite and infinite chains of excitation are examined. Part V presents and applies the theory of angular momentum to coherent excitation. The final part examines a number of extensions of coherent excitation, concluding with the theory of random processes and applications to the fluctuations that inevitably accompany excitation and act to destroy coherence. A set of appendices summarize background material.

Intense Resonant Interactions in Quantum Electronics
Author: V.M. Akulin
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642612415
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 315
Book Description
This book is a course of lectures given for senior students at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. For those who have graduated in the USSR this information should beisufficient to give an idea of the level and the manner in which the subject matter is presented. On the other hand, readers outside of this country may never have heard about this well-known Sgviet institution, and so we would like to say few words about it now. The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MFTI or Fiztekh) was founded in 1947 as the result of a special directive of Stalin in order to supply the space and nuclear program with highly educated experts. The best scientists in the country were involved in the foundation process. They invented an effective and flexible educational system that includes basic education accord ing to an university program followed by specialization at lead ing scientific centers. Being organized initially as a department of Moscow State University, MFTI recently separated into an inde pendent institution. In the sixties it lost its mainly top secret and military character and became the most prestigious place in the country for an education in physics. The political changes of the last few years have opened it to contacts with other countries. The course of lectures comprising this book is dedicated to the subject of the intense resonant interaction of laser radiation. with matter and contains a significant part of the Ph. D.
