Book Description
Parameterization programs involving infrared and solar radiation transfer in clear and cloudy atmospheres containing high and low cloud systems are described in this report. We document in detail the physical concepts and basic parameterization equations used for the computation of infrared and solar fluxes in clear and cloudy atmospheres along with the verification of various parametrization programs. In addition, we illustrate some preliminary results of the global distributions of the cloud and radiation budget generated from the AFGL model with the incorporation of the present radiation-cloud parameterization programs. Finally, we provide a description of the radiation parameterization computer programs including the programming interface with the AFGL six-layer general circulation model. (Author).

Book Description
A detailed description of a parameterization for thermal infrared radiative transfer designed specifically for use in global climate models is presented. The parameterization includes the effects of the main absorbers of terrestrial radiation: water vapor, carbon dioxide, and ozone. While being computationally efficient, the schemes compute very accurately the clear-sky fluxes and cooling rates from the Earth's surface to 0.01 mb. This combination of accuracy and speed makes the parameterization suitable for both tropospheric and middle atmospheric modeling applications. Since no transmittances are precomputed the atmospheric layers and the vertical distribution of the absorbers may be freely specified. The scheme can also account for any vertical distribution of fractional cloudiness with arbitrary optical thickness. These features make the parameterization very flexible and extremely well suited for use in climate modeling studies. In addition, the numerics and the FORTRAN implementation have been carefully designed to conserve both memory and computer time. This code should be particularly attractive to those contemplating long-term climate simulations, wishing to model the middle atmosphere, or planning to use a large number of levels in the vertical. Book Description
We have devised a computationally economic and accurate radiation program for incorporation in the global models developed at the A.F. Geophysics Laboratory. The program was specifically developed for applications to atmospheres containing high, middle, and low clouds and combinations of these clouds. In addition, we have also developed cloud formation schemes for general circulation models in connection with the radiation program. The present radiation and cloud parameterization program has been successfully incorporated in the AFGL 12-layer global model. Simulations have been performed for cloud and radiation budget distributions using the initial humidity and temperature fields from 12Z, 17 June 1979. Zonally averaged global distributions of cloud cover and radiation budgets at the top of the atmosphere are in general agreement with available cloud and radiation budget climatologies. We also discuss the importance of clouds in the generation of global atmospheric cooling using the results from the AFGL 12-layer model. Keywords: Infrared radiation; Solar radiation; Radiative transfer; Parameterization; AFGL variable-resolution model; Cloud formation; Cloud-radiation interaction.

Book Description
Using forecast relative humidity (RH) from a global model, several pre-existing diagnostic RH-to-cloud schemes were tested to forecast global fractional cloud cover in a postprocessor format. Since none of the schemes tested provided a superior cloud forecast when compared to Air Force Global Weather Central's (AFGWC) operational 5LAYER cloud forecasts, a new RH-to-cloud scheme was developed by relating cumulative frequencies of forecast RH to cumulative frequencies of analyzed cloud cover from the AFGWC RTNEPH cloud analysis. This scheme creates a series of forecast time-dependent RH-to-cloud curves that can be temporally updated to account for changes in season, cloud analysis, or forecast model, The global model used was a spectral-type developed by the Geophysics Laboratory (GL) using parameterized diabatic physics presently incorporated in the operational GSM (global spectral model) at AFGWC.
