Book Description
This book is an abbreviated, partly re-written version of "Under the Radar - The First Woman in Radio Astronomy: Ruby Payne-Scott." It addresses a general readership interested in historical and sociological aspects of astronomy and presents the biography of Ruby Payne-Scott (1912 – 1981). As the first female radio astronomer (and one of the first people in the world to consider radio astronomy), she made classic contributions to solar radio physics. She also played a major role in the design of the Australian government's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research radars, which were in turn of vital importance in the Southwest Pacific Theatre in World War II. These radars were used by military personnel from Australia, the United States and New Zealand. From a sociological perspective, her career offers many examples of the perils of being a female academic in the first half of the 20th century. Written in an engaging style and complemented by many historical photographs, this book offers fascinating insights into the beginnings of radio astronomy and the role of a pioneering woman in astronomy. To set the scene, the first colourfully illustrated chapter presents an overview of solar astrophysics and the tools of the radio astronomer. From the reviews of “Under the Radar”: “This is a beautifully-researched, copiously-illustrated and well-written book that tells us much more than the life of one amazing female radio astronomer. It also provides a profile on radar developments during WWII and on Australia’s pre-eminent place in solar radio astronomy in the years following WWII. Under the Radar is compelling reading, and if you have taken the time to read right through this review then it certainly belongs on your bookshelf!” (Wayne Orchiston, Journal of Astronomical History and Heritage, March, 2010)

Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 359
Book Description
"Aided by the bitter memories of the few survivors, Matthews devotes most detail to the victims, while noting that only one of his four villains could truly be said to have been brought to justice." —HistoryNet From the heart-rending account of the sinking of the German liner Wilhelm Gustloff in 1945 — the worst maritime disaster in world history — through to a variety of other brutal actions carried out by numerous submarine commanders, including the sinking of the hospital ship Centaur in 1943, this book comes from the deep shadows of a tragic past to reveal the terrible truth of a secretive war that was responsible for the deaths of unimaginable numbers of innocent people. Discover how merchant seamen were savagely machine-gunned in the water, callously slaughtered with hand-grenades or simply left to the circling sharks. Elsewhere, hundreds of doctors, nurses, ship’s crew, ambulance drivers and hospital orderlies were viciously killed without compassion, despite being protected by the Geneva Convention. Sea Wolves: Savage Submarine Commander of WW2 features true stories of deeply murderous intent that lurked menacingly beneath the waves.

Polymeric Protective Technical Textiles
Author: Brian J McCarthy
Publisher: Smithers Rapra
ISBN: 1847359647
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 180
Book Description
The current size of the personal protective clothing and equipment market in the EU alone is estimated at a 9.5-10 billion, with around 200,000 jobs directly or indirectly related to these products and services. The fast growth forecasted in certain parts of the world suggests that EU exports could grow by about 50% over the next 5-10 years. New fibres and new functionality will increase the global size of this niche market. Among the issues of specific concern for protective textiles are swifter development and use of international standards in the global market, which, combined with appropriate measures for the protection of intellectual property, would accelerate the increase in demand for protective textiles. This book contains authoritative chapters addressing issues ranging from anti-microbial textiles through to textiles for aircraft ejector seats. The protective textiles lead market offers opportunities for the entire textile sector. Spill-over effects from faster growing innovations in protective textiles to other market segments, such as interior textiles or functional clothing, would considerably increase the economic impact of the lead market, thus increasing the knowledge content and the added-value, contributing to a sustainable competitiveness of the entire textile sector. Global textile fibre usage in 2011 grew to 82 million tonnes and is estimated to grow to 101 million tonnes in 2017. There were record purchases of textile manufacturing machinery in 2012 - with increased use and processing of natural and synthetic polymer fibres. This book will prompt new ideas for product development in this rapidly expanding area and will be of interest to academics, students and industrialists.
