"[A] moving tale of resilience, hope, and the meaning of family." -- School Library Journal (starred review) Without you, there'd be no hope for the world. Because you are the whole world. That's what Teacher says, and twelve-year-old Eider knows she's right. The world ended long ago, and the desert ranch is the only thing left. Still, Eider's thoughts keep wandering Beyond the fence. Beyond the pleated earth and scraggly brush and tedious daily lessons. Eider can't help wishing for something more-like the stories in the fairytale book she hides in the storage room. Like the secret papers she collects from the world Before. Like her little sister who never really existed. When Teacher announces a new kind of lesson, Eider and the other kids are confused. Teacher says she needs to test their specialness-the reason they were saved from the end of the world. But seeing in the dark? Reading minds? As the kids struggle to complete Teacher's challenges, they also start to ask questions. Questions about their life on the desert ranch, about Before and Beyond, about everything Teacher has told them. But the thing about questions-they can be dangerous. This moving novel-equal parts hope and heartbreak-traces one girl's journey for truth and meaning, from the smallest slip of paper to the deepest understanding of family. The world may have ended for the kids of the desert ranch . . . but that's only the beginning.

Book Description
In the late nineteenth century, some of Britains leading main-line railway companies threw caution to the winds in an attempt to provide the fastest passenger express services between London and Scotland. These became known as the races to the north. There were two phases, in 1888 and 1895, and they spurred the building of new bridges across the Firth of Forth and Firth of Tay.David Wraggs gripping, detailed narrative tells the story of this epic engineering and commercial competition. He concentrates on the determination of the railway companies to see who could provide the fastest schedule between London and the main Scottish cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth, Dundee and Aberdeen.Casting aside their early policy of co-existence on these prestigious and lucrative routes, the West Coast and East Coast companies were drawn into a period of intense, highly publicized rivalry as they sought to dominate the market. David Wragg gives an insight into the conduct of the well-publicized highs and tragic lows of this dramatic story the extension of the lines to the far north, the building of the Tay and Forth bridges including the collapse of the first Tay bridge with 72 fatalities and the repeated bids by the companies to cut the journey times. While he describes the public side of this fascinating story, David Wragg fills in the background, which is no less interesting the pioneering engineering of the steam age, the massive construction projects, the cut-throat battle for passengers and freight and the deep inter-company rivalries that drove the rapid development of the railways during the Victorian period.

Book Description
Following the success of his first book, Drag Racing 101, where IH Racing’s Team Owner Ike Heckler Jr. explains how to build your first race car and secure sponsorship, Ike now brings you Drag Racing 201 – Racing in the New Economy. After racing at NHRA tracks in the northeast and southeast for the past 10 years in a booming economy where securing sponsorships was relatively easy, Ike takes you on an exciting journey through 2010 and explains what it is like to uproot your personal life in order to pursue the goal of semi-pro drag racing. With over 52 career round wins and national media exposure from SPEED TV’s Pinks All Out, NHRA’s National Dragster, and NMCA’s Fastest Street Car magazine, Ike has secured corporate sponsorships from Lucas Oil, VP Racing Fuels, WIX Filters, O’Reilly Auto Parts, ReMax Realty, Holiday Inn Hotels & Resorts, CARQUEST Auto Parts, and Ken’s Speed & Machine. IH Racing’s primary sponsor, Premier Properties of the Space Coast, is owned by Mr. Heckler and develops residential and commercial properties in southeast Florida. In Drag Racing 201 Ike explains how to use your own company together with your other sponsors to be able to fund a full race season and be able to travel the hundreds of miles from racetrack to racetrack economically. From getting into the Final 32 at the Pinks All Out event in West Palm, FL to making the WIX All Out 16 at the Pinks All Out event at zMax Dragway in Charlotte, Ike brings you along to all the other races and other fun events he was able to attend in 2010 with the help of good friends and sponsors. You will also ride along as he moves from Florida to North Carolina, then back to Florida just so he could honor his commitment to all his sponsors and race the season. He will also show you how the degrading economy affected his racing operation in 2010 and how he had to adjust and sacrifice his personal life to be able to race and survive. Drag Racing 201 then looks into the future of the sport and projects how it may look a few years from now and gives the reader some valuable tips on how to afford racing a full season and how the racer may have to live differently in order to race and live their dream. Ike also gives the reader some valuable sponsorship tips along the way that will help with sponsor exposure and could make securing sponsorships a little easier. This 80 page full color book has over 75 pictures highlighting the West Palm FL, Charlotte NC, and the Bristol TN Pinks All Out events (and getting on SPEED TV), the Atlanta, NHRA Unleashed event, and what it feels like to work for an NHRA national event. If your goal is to drag race in the New Economy, this book is a must read that will save you money and increase your sponsor exposure !!

Book Description
Dr Alverson's story covers his early life experiences, through high school, World War II, his education and his involvement in State, Federal and International fisheries science and management. His career and story cover the period (1950-2000) during which world fisheries would explode from small boat coastal activities to distant water fleets of large vessels. World catches would increase over 300% after WWII and most of the worlds oceans and seas would be heavily exploited. Overfishing and impacts on coastal fisheries would lead the world community to seek new laws for the harvest of ocean fisheries and result in unilateral extension of national jurisdictions over ocean space. The growth of environmental movement in the later half of the 20th century would lead to conflicts between fishing and conservation groups resulting in changes in national and international fish policies. The book tracks many of these developments and DR Alverson's personal involvements and experiences during the traumatic period of world fishery expansion. During the course of his life marine fisheries resource would be seen as the great source of world protein to feed the worlds hungry and later as overfished and polluted.

Mira Slovak was born in Czechoslovakia and endured both the Nazi occupation and the brutal Russian liberation. He joined the Czech Air force, rising to Captain by the age of 21. When he could no longer tolerate life under the Communists, he hijacked an airliner and flew across the Iron Curtain to freedom. He went to work for the CIA and was eventually sent to the US and given a job as Bill Boeing, Jr's personal pilot. When Boeing began racing Hydroplanes in the late 1950s, Mira was his driver. During his ten year career as a hydroplane driver, he won many races and two national championships. He met Presidents and dated movie starlets. After a serious hydroplane accident, Slovak switched to airplanes where he won another national championship. When he retired from racing he became a stunt pilot and public speaker and talked about the value of freedom and how we should value it above everything else. He outlasted Communism and when it collapsed in 1990 he returned to his home, only to realize that his true home was, and always would, be the United States.
