Modern structural engineering surprises us with the mastery and certainty with which it plans and carries out daring projects, such as the most recent metal or concrete bridges, whether they be suspension or arch bridges. On the other hand, little is yet known about the state of knowledge of construction science and techniques which, well before the arrival of modern methods based on the mechanics of deformable continua, made it possible in the past to erect the vaulted masonry structures rthat we have inherited. The fact that these have lasted through many centuries to our time, and are still in a fairly good state of conservation, makes them competitive, as far as stability and durability are concerned, with those constructed in other materials. Although it is known that the equilibrium of the arch is guaranteed by any funicular whatsoever of the loads, contained inside the profile of an arch, finding the unique solution is not such a certainty. In other words, the problem of the equilibrium of vaulted structures is 'Poleni's problem', the one for which the Venetian scientist was able to give an exemplary solution on the occasion of the assessment of the dome of St. Peter's. Arch Bridges focuses on the main aspects of the debate about the masonry arch bridge: History of structural mechanics and construction, theoretical models, analysis for assessment, numerical methods, experimental and non-destructive testing, maintenance and repair are the topics of the Conference. Il volume propone un’analisi dedicata ad esperienze condotte in territorio italiano che hanno goduto di grande fortuna critica, tracciando un dialogo a più voci fatto di parole, disegni ed immagini, con l’obiettivo di fornire un contributo utile nel delineare intenzioni e prassi dell’intervento contemporaneo per il costruito. Il progetto di restauro costituisce un progetto unitario d’architettura i cui temi salienti vengono articolati, nella trattazione, secondo un’esposizione tripartita: il progetto, l’architettura come realtà costruita, la divulgazione dei contenuti dell’intervento. Ad emergere è una significativa eterogeneità negli orientamenti di metodo e nelle modalità d’espressione del progetto: da atto che si concretizza con una dichiarata presa di distanza dall’antico, a nuova fase del processo di sedimentazione in continuità con la materia e con le forme del tempo. Ciononostante, la capacità di governare il dettaglio esprime, in ciascun ambito, la possibilità di conservare il manufatto anche attraverso una chiara definizione dell’interfaccia compresa tra nuovo e antico. L’autonomia espressiva dell’architettura contemporanea dedicata alle preesistenze storiche sembra risiedere, infatti, proprio nelle relazioni e nei rapporti sintattici instaurati, a diverse scale, attraverso i contributi che incidono e si interpolano con il destino delle testimonianze materiali del passato. SARA DI RESTA, architetto e dottore in Storia e Conservazione dei Beni Architettonici e Ambientali, è ricercatore di Restauro Architettonico nel DACC Dipartimento di Architettura Costruzione Conservazione dell’Università Iuav di Venezia. Il patrimonio architettonico e urbano del nostro passato è sempre più esposto al rischio di distruzione e manipolazione, a causa anche del permanere di equivoci culturali presso gran parte di coloro che si ritengono autorizzati a intervenire sulle opere e sui siti esistenti. Il saggio vuole indagare i diversi criteri e modi di intervento, non per sostenere la validità di un metodo rispetto a un altro, ma per esaminarne i principi interni di strutturazione. Le esperienze acquisite possano tutte ricondursi a tre precise direttive e finalità d’intervento: a) operare sul piano delle regole della stessa opera su cui si interviene; b) esibire la distinzione fra segni del passato e del presente, anche rinunciando a qualsiasi forma di compromissione con la materia costruita per garantirne l’autenticità; c) agire in ossequio alla forma architettonica, in veste di immagine e confronto fra i linguaggi del passato e quelli del presente. Vengono prospettate le antitesi, i contrasti, le contraddizioni, le affinità problematiche e le prospettive metodologiche compatibili e sostenibili, in un taglio decisamente analitico, tendente a chiarire i termini dei vari problemi, più che a risolverli.

Edoardo Benvenuto was born in Genoa on December 11, 1940. From 1965 to 1974 Edoardo Benvenuto worked at the Istituto Ligure Ricerche Economiche e Sociali (ILRES) as a researcher in Urban Studies, and also had an illustrious academic career in the Faculty of Engineering at Genoa University. In 1975 he was called to teach at the new Faculty of Architecture in Genoa; he became ist Dean in 1979 and remained in this post until 1997. While carrying out his institutional work, Benvenuto also maintained his interests in other studies concerning scientific, philosophic and theological thought. In recognition of his great devotion to work both as a teacher and researcher, in 1996 he was elected member of the UNESCO Committee for Exact Sciences; he also collaborated with the Committee for Culture. In 1997 the Order of Architects in Genoa made him an honorary member of the "Roll of Honour". In 1998 he became President of the Ligurian Academy of Science and Letters. He died in Genoa on November 27, 1998. On the first anniversary of the death of Edoardo Benvenuto, the Association "Associazione Benvenuto" chose to commemorate his scientific personality by holding an International Seminar "Homage to Edoardo Benvenuto" in Genoa from November 29, to December 1, 1999. On that occasion scholars of structural mechanics, architectural restoration and history of science, mathematics, architecture and construction presented the results of their research, thus reflecting the multiplicity of the interests he cultivated. With these proceedings, the Edoardo Benvenuto Association wishes to add its contribution to the research programme begun in 1993 with the Symposium "Between Mechanics and Architecture", organised by E. Benvenuto and P. Radelet de Grave and held during the XIX International Congress of History of Science, Zaragoza 1993.
