Book Description
This volume, the fourth in the Edinburgh Leventis Studies series, comprises a selection of papers from the conference held in Edinburgh March 2005 in conjunction with Professor Terry Penner's tenure of the A. G. Leventis Visiting Research Chair in Greek. It brings together contributions from leading Plato scholars from Britain, Europe and North America on a closely defined topic central to Plato's thought and to Ancient Philosophy--Plato's Form of the Good. The importance of the collection lies in the combination and presentation in one place of a range of different approaches to the good in Plato's Republic, and different solutions to the problems posed and proposed by these approaches. The two central issues, which form an underlying thread throughout the collection, are: first whether Plato's Republic is centred on what is good for individual humans, or on some quasi-moral good; and secondly, what the Form of the Good is. Pursuing the Good goes beyond recent studies in the field, and will appeal to classicists and philosophers alike. To the advanced student, it represents a wide-ranging introduction to central issues of Plato's philosophy; for the academic it will provide stimulus through antithetical and controversial solutions to questions old and new.

Winner of a 2020 Catholic Press Association book award (first place, backlist beauty). Do you ever feel caught in an endless cycle of working harder and longer to get more while enjoying life less? The Stewart family did—and they decided to make a radical change. Popular Catholic blogger and podcaster Haley Stewart explains how a year-long internship on a sustainable farm changed her family’s life for the better, allowing them to live gospel values more intentionally. When Haley Stewart married her bee-keeping sweetheart, Daniel, they dreamed of a life centered on home and family. But as the children arrived and Daniel was forced to work longer hours at a job he liked less and less, they dared to break free from the unending cycle of getting more yet feeling unfufilled. They sold their Florida home and retreated to Texas to live on a farm with a compost toilet and 650 square feet of space for a family of five. Surprisingly, they found that they had never been happier. In The Grace of Enough, Stewart shares essential elements of intentional Christian living that her family discovered during that extraordinary year on the farm and that they continue to practice today. You, too, will be inspired to: live simply offer hospitality revive food culture and the family table reconnect with the land nurture community prioritize beauty develop a sense of wonder be intentional about technology seek authentic intimacy center life around home, family, and relationships Drawing from Pope Francis’s encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si’, Stewart identifies elements of Catholic social teaching that will enhance your life and create a ripple effect of grace to help you overcome the effects of today’s “throwaway” culture and experience a deeper satisfaction and stronger faith.

Book Description
This book arose out of an investigative attempt to use methods adapted from the field of Organizational Culture to answer the related questions, "Where did the ideas behind the Declaration of Independence come from?", "What kind of men could create a document so powerful it became a revered work of what some call republican scripture?", "How did the supposedly flawed organization of the Continental Congress accomplish so much, and create so many ideas of so lasting importance?" And most important, "What lessons can we learn from them?" It suggests that 106 contributors to the Declaration - 100 delegates and 6 men of moral influence in Philadelphia connected to the congress - debated not only the politics of separation, but the moral philosophy that justified the revolution. The Declaration was as Jefferson called it a "harmonizing sentiment" among competing moral values systems of Calvinist-Puritans, Quaker-Spiritualists, Social-Anglicans and a new domestic school of moral philosophy American Practical Idealism that arose in 1740s at Yale, and the 1750s at King?s College (now Columbia) and the College of Philadelphia (now Penn). This last school of philosophy was not based on ideas from Locke, or English Republican Radicals, Scottish "innate sense" moral philosophy, as often suggested, but on the moral philosophy of the American Dr. Samuel Johnson of Yale and King's College, which was then promoted by Dr. Benjamin Franklin and Provost Dr. William Smith at the College of Philadelphia. It also suggests that the Continental Congress in its fifteen years of existence was not just a rather long ad hoc meeting of individuals in wigs. Rather, it was a tremendously effective organizational culture in itself that deserves to be analyzed for its extraordinary accomplishments -- and to see if we can imitate its successes.
