Book Description
Pulsars have been discovered in 1967 and identified with rotating neutron stars. Such stars form as a result of the collapse of ordinary stars which have exhausted their nuclear fuel. The magnetic field of neutron stars can reach a very high value of the order of 10 DEGREES13-10 DEGREES14 G. The magnetospheres formed around these stars should be very particular because of strong magnetic field and rapid rotation. A study of the pulsar magnetospheres is of great importance since it is the key issue to understand how the energy outflow to the exterior is produced. In this work, we consider magnetohydrodynamic processes in the pulsar magnetosphere. We study in detail the properties of magnetohydrodynamic waves that can exist in the magnetosphere and their instabilities. These instabilities can lead to formation of structures and be responsible for a short-term variability of the pu

Physics of the Pulsar Magnetosphere
Author: V. S. Beskin

ISBN: 0521417465

Pages : 434
Book Description
This book presents the theory of the electrodynamic phenomena that occur in the magnetosphere of a pulsar. It also provides a clear picture of the formation and evolution of neutron stars. The authors address the basic physical processes of electron-positron plasma production, the generation of electric fields and currents, and the emission of radio waves and gamma rays. The book also reviews the current observational data, and devotes a complete chapter to a detailed comparison of this data with accepted theory and with some recent theoretical predictions. Tables containing the values of the physical parameters of all observed radio pulsars are also provided.

Theory of Neutron Star Magnetospheres
Author: F. Curtis Michel
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 9780226523316
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 548
Book Description
An incomparable reference for astrophysicists studying pulsars and other kinds of neutron stars, Theory of Neutron Star Magnetospheres sums up two decades of astrophysical research. It provides in one volume the most important findings to date on this topic, essential to astrophysicists faced with a huge and widely scattered literature. F. Curtis Michel, who was among the first theorists to propose a neutron star model for radio pulsars, analyzes competing models of pulsars, radio emission models, winds and jets from pulsars, pulsating X-ray sources, gamma-ray burst sources, and other neutron-star driven phenomena. Although the book places primary emphasis on theoretical essentials, it also provides a considerable introduction to the observational data and its organization. Michel emphasizes the problems and uncertainties that have arisen in the research as well as the considerable progress that has been made to date.

Pulsar Astronomy
Author: Andrew Lyne
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108864104
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 422
Book Description
After more than half a century since their unexpected discovery and identification as neutron stars, the observation and understanding of pulsars touches upon many areas of astronomy and astrophysics. The literature on pulsars is vast and the observational techniques used now cover the whole of the electromagnetic spectrum from radio to gamma-rays. Now in its fifth edition, this volume has been reorganised and features new material throughout. It provides an introduction in historical and physical terms to the many aspects of neutron stars, including condensed matter, physics of the magnetosphere, supernovae and the development of the pulsar population, propagation in the interstellar medium, binary stars, gravitation and general relativity. The current development of a new generation of powerful radio telescopes, designed with pulsar research in mind, makes this survey and guide essential reading for a growing body of students and astronomers.
