Book Description
Excerpt from Annotated Catalogue of Newspaper Files in the Library of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin The first edition of the Annotated Catalogue o Newspaper Files in the Wisconsin State Historical Library was published in 1898, and compiled by the late Emma Helen Blair, then a member of the staff. In the intervening fourteen years, the Library's files have greatly increased in number of volumes and in geographical range; a second edition has therefore become necessary. In its preparation, the matter published in the first edition has been used as a basis; but in the effort to bring the new volume down to date, to include new files, and to introduce fresh data in the historical notes, thousands of changes have been made. The alphabetization, typography, and make-up of the present volume are also quite different from the former; and in these respects at least, there has been marked improvement both in appearance and in facility of consultation. Explanation seems necessary regarding the newly-adopted alphabetical arrangement. The classification by states and cities is obvious; the order of titles under each city, however, may at first seem eccentric. But the word in the title which is most commonly used or is more descriptive, has been chosen as the one determining the alphabetical position - not as commonly done, the first word in the title. This selected word (which in the Library of Congress Check List of Newspapers whose style we have followed in this particular, is called the "surname" of the paper) has been printed in small capitals, thus: 'Labor Advocate," 'Alabama Watchman," "National Democrat." The following descriptive title-words have, among many others, been selected as descriptive surnames: "Labor," "social," 'socialist," "commercial," "industrial," "mercantile," "workmen's," "co-operative," "religious," "woman's," "dramatic," "Christian," "union," "united" - also the names of trades, professions, denominations, and nationalities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Wisconsin's Foundations
Author: Gwen Schultz
Publisher: Univ of Wisconsin Press
ISBN: 9780299198749
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 230
Book Description
Most Wisconsin citizens share a deep appreciation of the shape and texture of their familiar landscapes-the abundance of fresh water, the fertile soils, the northern forests, the varied landforms. All these features are directly related to a special set of geologic processes and materials that collectively define the land on which we all live, work, and play. But how did it come to be this way? How did it look in the past? What kinds of creatures lived here before us? In Wisconsin's case, the geologic story is long, complex, and incomplete, beginning over three billion years ago and still in progress. Wisconsin's Foundations is just the book for a broad audience of interested citizens who simply want to know more about the origins, evolution, and geological underpinnings of the Wisconsin landscape.

Vintage Wisconsin Gardens
Author: Lee Somerville
Publisher: Wisconsin Historical Society
ISBN: 0870206583
Category : Gardening
Languages : en
Pages : 199
Book Description
As Wisconsin’s population moved from farmsteads into villages, towns, and cities, the state saw a growing interest in gardening as a leisure activity and source of civic pride. In Vintage Wisconsin Gardens, Lee Somerville introduces readers to the region’s ornamental gardens of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, showcasing the “vernacular” gardens created by landscaping enthusiasts for their own use and pleasure. The Wisconsin State Horticultural Society, established during the mid-nineteenth century, was the primary source of advice for home gardeners. Through carefully selected excerpts from WSHS articles, Somerville shares the excitement of these gardeners as they traded cultivation and design knowledge and explored the possibilities of their avocation. Women were frequent presenters at the WSHS annual meetings, and their voices resonate. Their writings, and those of their male colleagues, are a remarkable legacy we can draw on today—learning how Wisconsinites past created and enjoyed their gardens helps us appreciate our own. Filled with period and contemporary images, recommended plant lists, and garden layouts, Vintage Wisconsin Gardens will interest those curious about the history of the state’s cultural landscape and inspire readers to restore or reconstruct period gardens.
