Nietzsche's Philosophy of Religion
Author: Julian Young
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1107320879
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 4
Book Description
In his first book, The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche observes that Greek tragedy gathered people together as a community in the sight of their gods, and argues that modernity can be rescued from 'nihilism' only through the revival of such a festival. This is commonly thought to be a view which did not survive the termination of Nietzsche's early Wagnerianism, but Julian Young argues, on the basis of an examination of all of Nietzsche's published works, that his religious communitarianism in fact persists through all his writings. What follows, it is argued, is that the mature Nietzsche is neither an 'atheist', an 'individualist', nor an 'immoralist': he is a German philosopher belonging to a German tradition of conservative communitarianism - though to claim him as a proto-Nazi is radically mistaken. This important reassessment will be of interest to all Nietzsche scholars and to a wide range of readers in German philosophy.

Antichrist
Author: Friedrich Nietzsche
Publisher: Courier Dover Publications
ISBN: 048682666X
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 99
Book Description
"In truth there was only one Christian, and he died on the cross," declares Friedrich Nietzsche in this famous attack on Christianity and organized religion. A deep exploration and repudiation of Christian symbolism and morality, The Antichrist was the last of Nietzsche's works save for his autobiography, Ecco Homo. As such, it may be regarded as a final statement of some of his most important ideas. This polemic is also one of the philosopher's most conventionally formatted books, consisting of a connected argument with few digressions and a clearly defined beginning, middle, and end. Indeed, it ranks among philosophy's most accessible and easily understood works, consisting of 62 brief chapters. Each chapter features an aphorism that advances the author's arguments against Christian tenets. Fast-paced, concise, and brimming with conviction, Nietzsche's landmark work is essential to a grasp of his complete oeuvre.

The Shadow of the Antichrist
Author: Stephen N. Williams
Publisher: Baker Academic
ISBN:
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 324
Book Description
"In The Shadow of the Antichrist, Williams fills a significant gap in the scholarly literature by examining Nietzsche's critique of Christianity and his continuing influence. Williams begins with a basic question - What was it about Christianity that caused Nietzsche's agitation? He aims to answer that question not with a systematic survey of Nietzsche's thought but rather through a careful examination of themes that emerge in his ruminations on religion."--BOOK JACKET.

Psychology and Religion Within an Ideological Surround
Author: Paul J. Watson
Publisher: Brill Research Perspectives in
ISBN: 9789004411180
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 96
Book Description
For over three decades, an Ideological Surround Model (ISM) has pursued theoretical and methodological innovations designed to enhance the 'truth' and 'objectivity' of research into psychology and religion. The foundational argument of the ISM is that psychology as well as religion unavoidably operates within the limits of an ideological surround. Methodological theism, therefore, needs to supplement the methodological atheism that dominates the contemporary social sciences. Methodological theism should operationalize the meaningfulness of religious traditions and demonstrate empirically that the influences of ideology cannot be ignored. The ISM more generally suggests that contemporary social scientific rationalities need to be supplemented my more complex dialogical rationalities. Beliefs in secularization should also be supplemented by beliefs in trans-rationality.
