Their work spread across continents, surviving the Renaissance, reform, and revolutions to arrive in America with European immigrants. Seven hundred years after the founding of the Order of Preachers, that mission would lead to the formation of Providence College.So it was that the four elements of the Dominican Order--preaching, study, prayer, and community--would find practical application in early 20th century Rhode Island, in a working-class town that wrestled with constantly changing dynamics of faith and ethnicity.While the educational approach was tailored to the Dominican tradition, the he spirit of the institution was captured in the College's articles of incorporation: "No person shall be refused admission to said college as a student, nor shall any person be denied any of the privileges, honors or degrees of said college on account of the religious opinions he may entertain," the charter concluded.On May 25, 1919, the 50th anniversary of Bishop Harkins' ordination, Providence College was dedicated. Four months later, seventy-one students and nine Dominican faculty members converged to represent the inaugural class.
