Proud of What I Was — a Soldier
Author: Richard Dan Hill
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1465395563
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 386
Book Description
Anyone who ever served in the military can tell a similar story. The circumstances change and the names are different, but when you deal with young soldiers anything is probable. Hill tells the reader about many of these young men and women in some very funny situations. He also details what it is like to be the commander of a unit with 200 or more of these soldiers, in peacetime and in war. In telling the story of his long and varied career, he offers some real leadership gems that carry over to industry. As one observer quipped, every Lieutenant should read this book before spending a day with troops; he will either resign his commission or stay in the military until they kick him out. The author refers to the family members of military members as the real heroes in the military. You will gain a whole new appreciation of what it is like to be an Army spouse. Hill and his wife, Carla, moved 16 times during his 24 year career. Once children came along, it meant new adventures, along with new schools and new friends. The term Army Brat is worn with pride, but it is a title that is hard earned. One knows that military families are nomads, but the author explains how assignments happen and the consequences of decisions on careers and promotion. He tells the reader about dealing with the ubiquitous assignment offi cer. The citizen who has never been around the military will learn a great deal about the inner workings of the career Army Officer and those who support them. You will laugh out loud at some of these tales and cry when you learn about the sacrifices these soldiers and the families make. You will swell with pride when you hear how some of these men respond from unspeakable adversity. Hill is unabashedly proud of all veterans and as the title states, he is proud of his many years of serviceHe is Proud of What he wasA soldier.

Many Excellent People
Author: Paul D. Escott
Publisher: UNC Press Books
ISBN: 1469610965
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 367
Book Description
Many Excellent People examines the nature of North Carolina's social system, particularly race and class relations, power, and inequality, during the last half of the nineteenth century. Paul Escott portrays North Carolina's major social groups, focusing on the elite, the ordinary white farmers or workers, and the blacks, and analyzes their attitudes, social structure, and power relationships. Quoting frequently from a remarkable array of letters, journals, diaries, and other primary sources, he shows vividly the impact of the Civil War, Emancipation, Reconstruction, Populism, and the rise of the New South industrialism on southern society. Working within the new social history and using detailed analyses of five representative counties, wartime violence, Ku Klux Klan membership, stock-law legislation, and textile mill records, Escott reaches telling conclusions on the interplay of race, class, and politics. Despite fundamental political and economic reforms, Escott argues, North Carolina's social system remained as hierarchical and undemocratic in 1900 as it had been in 1850.

Tropical Cool: A Buddhist Manual of Air Conditioning
Author:
Publisher: Dick Meehan
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 198
Book Description
A case can be made, and has been made by Pope Francis, that the extensive use of air conditioning use in the developed world, especially the United States, is a careless excess and poor example to the rest of the world. Indeed, it makes a mockery of the current ideology of energy sustainability including concerns about prevention of global warming. Extension of wasteful practices of air conditioning to emerging economies (like India) is easily shown to be unsustainable. As with other recalcitrant problems such as over-reliance on cars and poor personal health and dietary habits (smoking, processed foods) the source of the problem is found individual moral choices that are championed as individual freedoms but actually represent a degenerate morality which yields more benefit to corporations and big government than to people. The Buddhist ethic provides one path into the heart of human choices illuminating as it does the "incorrect thinking" that underlies bad choices including those that most people think are based on common sense and scientific expertise. This book applies this idea to the matter of air conditioning, using Thailand and like Southeast Asian settings as an example. It makes the claim that emerging western interest in "mindfulness" could be leveraged to introduce new thinking on personal energy use that will go much further to create true sustainability than programs based on "harnessing" geophysical technologies such as solar and wind.
