Book Description
The book presents a unique example of integral planning at different scales and across different types of landscapes found on the outskirts of metropolitan areas. It features a sustainability-based plan to improve the evolution of the south-central area of the Calderona Mountain Range, Spain (Sierra Calderona). It is informed and driven by social, cultural, perceptual, sustainability and economic factors supported by a participative process. The plan addresses the frequent conflict between the management of natural and cultural values found in peri-urban areas and the strong pressure for transformation and public use. Incorporating new methodologies and graphical systems for regional and local planning, the plan provides a practical example of balanced and multidisciplinary planning, based on principles of sustainability, systems thinking, new governance and local adaptation. This is volume one of a two-volume series. It elaborates on regional analysis and diagnosis, and on the definition of strategies for the following themes: natural environment, agriculture and livestock farming, urban environment and wellbeing, infrastructures and mobility, cultural heritage, tourism and public use, landscape, sustainability, socio-demography, economic development and governance. The book is intended for planners and researchers from various disciplines, including urban planning, forestry, agriculture, cultural and touristic management, and sustainability studies.

Book Description
This title was first published in 2002: This work is about the socio-economic and spatial impacts of planning policy aimed at improving the living standards and well-being of the regional communities of Ghana. Implicit, the effectiveness assessment of regional planning practice. It is set within the context of the new national planning system and offers strategic opportunities and challenges. Characteristically, the national and regional policies and contacts are probed and the lack of formal regional plan-making stressed. The author critically analyzes the problem of socio-economic and spatial disparities, over the mid-60s to the early 1990s, explaining the observed changes. The latter is, differentiatingly, done in terms of relevant theories and the empirics undertaken. These include the fashion of perception and conceptualization of development. Change is based on one-off micro-projects at the regional level and a meso-regional project within a sub-regional context. Dr Ofori equally stresses the implementations and local management of the planning policies and programmes. Inclusive in the dynamics behind the processes is the role of partnership. A further distinctive contribution is the identification of opportunities for planning intervention and policy recommendations for a better change in the future: towards making things happen.

Book Description
Across the United States, issues such as sustainability, smart growth, and livable communities are making headlines. Planning for a New Century brings together leading thinkers in the fields of planning, urban design, education, welfare, and housing to examine those issues and to consider the ways in which public policies have helped create—and can help solve—many of the problems facing our communities. Each chapter identifies issues, provides background, and offers specific policy suggestions for federal, state, and local initiatives. Topics examined include: the relation of existing growth management policies to social equity, as well as how regional growth management measures can make new development more sustainable how an obscure technical procedure in highway design becomes a de facto regional plan ways in which local governments can promote environmental preservation and better-designed communities by rewriting local zoning and subdivision ordinances why alleviating housing shortages and slum conditions has resulted in a lack of affordable housing, and how that problem can be solved how business improvement districts can make downtowns cleaner, safer, and more welcoming to workers and visitors In addition, the book features chapters on public safety, education, and welfare reform that include proposals that will help make regional growth management easier as inner-city crime is reduced, schools are improved, and concentrations of extreme poverty are eliminated. Planning for the New Century brings together current academic research with pressing public policy concerns, and will be a useful resource for policymakers at all levels of government, for planners and architects, and for students and scholars of urban planning and design, and urban studies.
