D* production is studied in the decay chain D* .-->. D° .pi. with the D° observed in the K−.pi.+ mode and the corresponding charge conjugate decays. The results were obtained from a preliminary analysis of an 80 pb−1 data sample of e+e− annihilations at 29 GeV taken with the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP. The excellent mass resolution of the HRS allows the study of the D* production and decay with very low background. We present the fragmentation function over the range of Z from 0.2 to 1.0.

Results are presented on the analysis of charm D Production from 300 pb−1 of data taken with the HRS Detector at PEP. The electroweak asymmetry is -8.4 +- 3.6% and R (D + D*) = 1.57 +- 0.17. We have studied hadron production in ee− annihilation at 29 GeV center-of-mass energy using the PEP-4 Time Projection Chamber Detector. The inclusive cross sections and mean multiplicities for .pi./sup + -/, K/sup + -/ and (p + anti p) production have been measured using ionization energy loss to separate particle species. We find on average 10.7 +- 0.6 .pi./sup + -/, 1.35 +- 13 K/sup + -/ and 0.60 +- 0.08 (p + anti p) per multihadron event. The differential cross section is well described by a number of Monte Carlo hadronization models. In addition, we have observed correlations in rapidity space for identified pions and kaons. Short-range KK correlations provide evidence for local flavor compensation during hadronization. Long-range .pi pi. and KK correlations indicate that the initial partons carry flavor. We also observe significant long-range .pi. K correlations as a result of heavy quark decays. 85 references, 67 figures, 11 tables.

The 50-year history of weak interaction since Fermi's pro posal of this coupling has been marked with striking direct inter plays between experimental results and theoretical understanding, e.g. the discoveries of neutrinos, parity violation, and CP vio lation. The recent discoveries of the quark hierarchy, the charm and the beauty, and the intermediate vector bosons W± and ZO have truly made a splendid page in the history of particle physics.
