Book Description
A groundbreaking consideration of death from capitalism, from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century From a 2013 Texas fertilizer plant explosion that killed fifteen people and injured 252 to a 2017 chemical disaster in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, we are confronted all too often with industrial accidents that reflect the underlying attitude of corporations toward the lives of laborers and others who live and work in their companies’ shadows. Dead Labor takes seriously the myriad ways in which bodies are commodified and profits derived from premature death. In doing so it provides a unique perspective on our understanding how life and death drive the twenty-first-century global economy. James Tyner tracks a history from the 1600s through which premature death and mortality became something calculable, predictable, manageable, and even profitable. Drawing on a range of examples, including the criminalization of migrant labor, medical tourism, life insurance, and health care, he explores how today we can no longer presume that all bodies undergo the same processes of life, death, fertility, and mortality. He goes on to develop the concept of shared mortality among vulnerable populations and examines forms of capital exploitation that have emerged around death and the reproduction of labor. Positioned at the intersection of two fields—the political economy of labor and the philosophy of mortality—Dead Labor builds on Marx’s notion that death (and truncated life) is a constant factor in the processes of labor. Considering premature death also as a biopolitical and bioeconomic concept, Tyner shows how racialized and gendered bodies are exposed to it in unbalanced ways within capitalism, and how bodies are then commodified, made surplus and redundant, and even disassembled in order to accumulate capital.

Book Description
For readers of Being Mortal and When Breath Becomes Air, the acclaimed founder of Death over Dinner offers a practical, inspiring guide to life's most difficult yet important conversation. Of the many critical conversations we will all have throughout our lifetime, few are as important as the ones discussing death—and not just the practical considerations, such as DNRs and wills, but what we fear, what we hope, and how we want to be remembered. Yet few of these conversations are actually happening. Inspired by his experience with his own father and countless stories from others who regret not having these conversations, Michael Hebb cofounded Death Over Dinner—an organization that encourages people to pull up a chair, break bread, and really talk about the one thing we all have in common. Death Over Dinner has been one of the most effective end-of-life awareness campaigns to date; in just three years, it has provided the framework and inspiration for more than a hundred thousand dinners focused on having these end-of-life conversations. As Arianna Huffington said, "We are such a fast-food culture, I love the idea of making the dinner last for hours. These are the conversations that will help us to evolve." Let's Talk About Death (over Dinner) offers keen practical advice on how to have these same conversations—not just at the dinner table, but anywhere. There's no one right way to talk about death, but Hebb shares time—and dinner—tested prompts to use as conversation starters, ranging from the spiritual to the practical, from analytical to downright funny and surprising. By transforming the most difficult conversations into an opportunity, they become celebratory and meaningful—ways that not only can change the way we die, but the way we live.

Book Description
Ascertaining the Amount Due to Retiring/Deceased Partner When a partner retires or passes away, the amount due to the retiring or deceased partner needs to be ascertained. This amount typically includes the partner's share of the partnership's assets, including their share of goodwill, and any accumulated profits or losses up to the date of retirement or death. Here's how you can ascertain the amount due to a retiring or deceased partner: Calculate the Partner's Capital Account Balance: Determine the partner's capital account balance as of the date of retirement or death. This balance represents the partner's initial capital contribution, their share of profits or losses, and any additional capital contributions or withdrawals made during their tenure in the partnership. Value Partnership Assets: Revalue partnership assets, including both tangible and intangible assets such as property, equipment, inventory, and goodwill. The valuation should reflect the fair market value of these assets as of the date of retirement or death. Determine Partnership Liabilities: Identify and quantify partnership liabilities, including debts, accounts payable, and any other obligations. Subtract these liabilities from the total value of partnership assets to determine the partnership's net assets. Calculate the Partner's Share of Net Assets: Determine the retiring or deceased partner's share of the partnership's net assets based on their capital account balance and profit-sharing ratio as specified in the partnership agreement. This share represents the amount of assets attributable to the partner. Adjust for Goodwill: If goodwill is recorded in the partnership's books, determine the retiring or deceased partner's share of goodwill based on the agreed-upon valuation method. Include this amount in the calculation of the partner's share of net assets. Account for Accrued Profits or Losses: Consider any accumulated profits or losses that have not yet been distributed to partners. Allocate these profits or losses to the retiring or deceased partner based on their profit-sharing ratio to determine their entitlement. Deduct Partner's Capital Account Balance: Subtract the retiring or deceased partner's capital account balance from their share of net assets to ascertain the amount due to the partner. This amount represents the partner's final settlement from the partnership. Settlement Process: Arrange for the payment of the amount due to the retiring or deceased partner. This may involve transferring cash, assets, or a combination thereof to the partner or their estate as specified in the partnership agreement or applicable laws. By following these steps, you can ascertain the amount due to a retiring or deceased partner in a partnership, ensuring a fair and equitable settlement that reflects the partner's contributions and entitlements within the partnership.
