Book Description
Tribology is the study of friction, wear and lubrication. Recently, the concept of “green tribology” as “the science and technology of the tribological aspects of ecological balance and of environmental and biological impacts” was introduced. The field of green tribology includes tribological technology that mimics living nature (biomimetic surfaces) and thus is expected to be environmentally friendly, the control of friction and wear that is of importance for energy conservation and conversion, environmental aspects of lubrication and surface modification techniques, and tribological aspects of green applications such as wind-power turbines or solar panels. This book is the first comprehensive volume on green tribology. The chapters are prepared by leading experts in their fields and cover such topics as biomimetics, environmentally friendly lubrication, tribology of wind turbines and renewable sources of energy, and ecological impact of new technologies of surface treatment.

Book Description
Superlubricity is defined as a sliding regime in which friction or resistance to sliding vanishes. It has been shown that energy can be conserved by further reducing/removing friction in moving mechanical systems and this book includes contributions from world-renowned scientists who address some of the most fundamental research issues in overcoming friction. Superlubricity reviews the latest methods and materials in this area of research that are aimed at removing friction in nano-to-micro scale machines and large scale engineering components. Insight is also given into the atomic-scale origins of friction in general and superlubricity while other chapters focus on experimental and practical aspects or impacts of superlubricity that will be very useful for broader industrial community.* Reviews the latest fundamental research in superlubricity today* Presents 'state-of-the-art' methods, materials, and experimental techniques* Latest developments in tribomaterials, coatings, and lubricants providing superlubricity

Book Description
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Cellular Automata for Research and Industry, ACRI 2008, held in Yokohama, Japan, in September 2008. The 43 revised full papers and 22 revised poster papers presented together with 4 invited lectures were carefully reviewed and selected from 78 submissions. The papers focus on challenging problems and new research not only in theoretical but application aspects of cellular automata, including cellular automata tools and computational sciences. The volume also contains 11 extended abstracts dealing with crowds and cellular automata, which were presented during the workshop C&CA 2008. The papers are organized in topical sections on CA theory and implementation, computational theory, physical modeling, urban, environmental and social modeling, pedestrian and traffic flow modeling, crypto and security, system biology, CA-based hardware, as well as crowds and cellular automata.

Book Description
Water Lubricated Journal Bearings: Marine Applications, Design, and Operational Problems and Solutions provides cutting-edge design solutions, common problems and methods for avoiding them, and material selection considerations for use of water lubricated journal bearings in marine environments. These bearings have many advantages, among them the absence of the potential for oil contamination. They are also sensitive, and their production processes can be challenging, but this book outlines techniques and concepts designed to overcome these challenges, emphasizing their role in durable and reliable propulsion systems in modern, safe, and environment-friendly shipping. Propeller shafts, water lubricated stern tube bearings, problems frequently encountered with water lubricated propeller shaft bearings and sliding bearings alongside solutions to these problems are all covered, as are the hydrodynamic properties of water lubricated bearings, operation at low revolution speeds, high speed bearings, hybrid bearings, and more. Foundational concepts of tribology related to friction, lubrication, wear, and fluid/solid and solid/solid interactions in ship stern tube and water lubricated turbine machinery are also discussed. - Provides cutting-edge design solutions and material selection considerations for water-lubricated journal bearings - Outlines common problems and solutions for overcoming them when working with water-lubricated propeller shaft bearings, sliding bearings, and hybrid bearings - Presents theoretical and experimental research on bearings, including the influence of bush shape imperfections and misalignment

Book Description
Surface science and tribology play very critical roles in many industries. Manufacture and use of almost all consumer and industrial products rely on the application of advanced surface and tribological knowledge. The fourth in a series, Surfactants in Tribology, Volume 4 provides an update on research and development activities connecting surfactants and tribological phenomena. Written by renowned subject matter experts, the book demonstrates how improved design of surfactants can be harnessed to control tribological phenomena. Profusely illustrated and copiously referenced, the chapters also discuss novel approaches to control tribological phenomena using surfactants including green surfactants. It also discusses the underlying tribological and surface science issues relevant to many situations in diverse industries. The information in this volume provides a cutting-edge reference connecting the fields of surfactants and tribology as a way forward to novel, enhanced methods of controlling lubrication, friction, and wear. It reflects the latest developments, highlighting the relevance of surfactants in tribological phenomena in a broad range of industries. As we learn more about the connection between surfactants and tribology, new and improved ways to control lubrication, friction, and wear utilizing surfactants will emerge. This book takes us farther on the path towards this goal.

Book Description
This book provides an updated review on the development of scanning probe microscopy and related techniques, and the availability of computational techniques not even imaginable a few decades ago. The 36 chapters cover instrumental aspects, theoretical models and selected experimental results, thus offering a broad panoramic view on fundamental issues in nanotribology which are currently being investigated. Compared to the first edition, several topics have been added, including triboluminescence, graphene mechanics, friction and wear in liquid environments, capillary condensation, and multiscale friction modeling. Particular care has been taken to avoid overlaps and guarantee the independence of the chapters. In this way, our book aims to become a key reference on this subject for the next five to ten years to come.
