Participants from the fishing industry, provincial and federal governments and the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council participated in a regional review of groundfish stocks and selected invertebrate stocks in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. The purpose of the meeting was to conduct peer-review assessments of Atlantic cod, winter flounder, yellowtail flounder, American lobster and rock crab in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. Stock status updates for White Hake and American plaice in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence and witch flounder for the entire gulf were also presented. Papers were presented on the following topics: environmental conditions in the southern Gulf in 2001; cod consumption by seal species; size at sexual maturity, and spatial and temporal variability of lobster landings in the southern Gulf.

In 1994, the stock assessments of groundfish and pelagic fish species were reviewed regionally. As such, this report documents the review process followed in the Gulf Region including the consultations with industry and the peer review process. The technical details of the stock assessments for groundfish (cod in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, witch flounder in 4RST, American plaice, winter flounder and white hake in 4T) and for herring in 4T are described. A regional overview describing the general stock trends and an environmental summary describing climatic conditions in 1993 compared to previous years is also presented. The report provides the scientific basis of the conclusions on the status of the stocks for 1994 and provides a technical record of the discussions.

These proceedings record the discussions & comments received on the status of groundfish & herring stocks in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence during science workshops held late 1996 in five locations in Quebec and the Maritime Provinces. The objectives of the workshops were to present preliminary 1996 scientific & fishery information and to obtain the views of industry & the public on the status of these stocks. In addition, they provided a post-fishery & pre-assessment forum to discuss the data, analyses, & studies to be included in the 1997 assessment of these resources. The discussions focussed on the research surveys, sentinel surveys, other research projects, and preliminary fishery information for the following stocks: cod, American plaice, flounder, white hake, and dogfish.
