Book Description
Excerpt from Publications, Vol. 5: Proceedings, January 25 October 25, 1910 For every sin of management there are a dozen sins of use in publishing historical material. It is one thing to collect, and quite another to publish. The necessity for collecting printed matter has been much restricted in recent years by the growth Of the public library. The necessary tools of workers and the rare or unusual are proper Objects Of a collecting society. Yet even here there are limitations. Why, for example, should the Massachusetts Bistori cal Society, or this Society, seek to Obtain the rarities of New England history by purchase, when copies are available in the Boston Public, in Harvard University, in the John Carter Brown and in the American Antiquarian Society libraries? These rarities cost from $50 to $1000, and no one short of a millionaire can hope to gather even a small number of them in a lifetime Of ardent collecting. The Massachusetts Historical Society has directed its means towards publishing, and wisely; for many a society has been burdened with a few very good pieces, buried in eccentrically geo graphical situations, where they cannot be seen and their very exist ence is almost unknown; and many a one has been crippled at the outset by this ambition to have and to hold costly rarities. The mere possession and its cost have reduced them to a condition of helplessness in publishing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Memorial History of Boston, Vol. 3 of 4: Including Suffolk County, Massachusetts, 1630-1880 There are other plans in the English translation of Botta's War of Independence, in Ridpath's United States, and in other popular histories. A good eclectic map is given in Carrington's Battles of tite American Revolution, ch. 15. A map of Charlestown and plan of the battle (16% x 14 inches), by James E. Stone, was published by Prang Co. In 1875. Felton and Parker's large survey of Charlestown, 1848, is of use in identifying localities, being made on the same scale as Page's plan; and it helped Thomas W. Davis in making a Plan slzowing t/ze redoubt, breastwork, rail-fence, and grass protection, which was published in the Bunker Hill Monument Association's Proceedings, 1876, of which a section is given in Dr. Hale's chapter. Book Description
Excerpt from Life and Letters of John Winthrop, Vol. 1: Governor of the Massachusetts-Bay Company at Their Emigration to New England, 1630 There is nothing in this volume which calls for any other preface than that which is supplied in the Introductory Chapter; but I am unwilling that it should go forth without a word of grateful acknowledgment to my valued friends, the Rev. Chandler Robbins, D. D., and Charles Deane, Esq., A. M., for the aid they have given me in preparing it for the press. I have also been indebted to Charles Francis Winthrop, Esq., of New York, to H. G. Somerby, Esq., and to W. H. Whitmore, Esq., for papers and references; and to Dr. John Appleton, the Assistant Librarian of the Massachusetts Historical Society, for the preparation of the autographs and seals in the Appendix. Nor could I pardon myself for omitting the name of the late Francis B. Winthrop, of New London, from whom many of the most interesting materials of the volume were procured; and who has since fallen a victim to disease contracted while he was serving as a volunteer in the army of the American Union. Book Description
The bestselling author of In the Heart of the Sea, Mayflower, and In the Hurricane's Eye tells the story of the Boston battle that ignited the American Revolution, in this "masterpiece of narrative and perspective." (Boston Globe) In the opening volume of his acclaimed American Revolution series, Nathaniel Philbrick turns his keen eye to pre-Revolutionary Boston and the spark that ignited the American Revolution. In the aftermath of the Boston Tea Party and the violence at Lexington and Concord, the conflict escalated and skirmishes gave way to outright war in the Battle of Bunker Hill. It was the bloodiest conflict of the revolutionary war, and the point of no return for the rebellious colonists. Philbrick gives us a fresh view of the story and its dynamic personalities, including John Adams, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Paul Revere, and George Washington. With passion and insight, he reconstructs the revolutionary landscape—geographic and ideological—in a mesmerizing narrative of the robust, messy, blisteringly real origins of America.
