Flaws and Ceilings
Author: Christopher Coyne
Publisher: London Publishing Partnership
ISBN: 0255367023
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 227
Book Description
Price controls across many sectors are currently being hotly debated. New controls in the housing market, more onerous minimum wages, minimum prices for alcohol, and freezes on energy prices are very high up the agenda of most politicians at the moment. Even without any further controls, wages, university fees, railway fares and many financial products already have their prices at least partly determined by politicians rather than by supply and demand in the market. Indeed, barely a sector of the UK economy is unaffected in one way or another by government controls on prices. This book demonstrates why economists do not like price controls and shows why they are widely regarded as being amongst the most damaging political interventions in markets. The authors analyse, in a very readable fashion, the damage they cause. Crucially, the authors also explain why, despite universal criticism from economists, price controls are so popular amongst politicians.

Feasibility Study of Road Pricing in the UK
Author: Great Britain. Department for Transport
Publisher: The Stationery Office
ISBN: 9781904763499
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 204
Book Description
This study considers the feasibility of options for a new system of charging for road use in the UK, in order to make better use of road capacity and to help reduce traffic congestion. This would mean moving away from the current motoring taxation system and introducing a variable charging system depending on the level of road congestion. Issues discussed include: public attitudes, travel trends, options for national road pricing, institutional aspects of implementation, possible interim options to a national scheme, including the UK lorry road user charging scheme and local congestion charging pathfinder schemes. Amongst the report's conclusions, it finds that national road pricing is becoming feasible in the medium-term (in 10 to 15 years) and could meet the Government's objectives. However, its successful implementation requires the promotion of a greater degree of public acceptance. Although a national scheme is still some years off, a number of practical steps can be taken now in preparation, including promoting a public debate to inform and raise awareness, with research into road users' behaviour and implications for business; working with car manufacturers in the development of vehicle technology standards; and working with local authorities on introducing local charging schemes to tackle congestion problems. This document is published alongside the Transport White Paper "The future of transport: a network for 2030" (Cm. 6234, ISBN 0101623429).

Criteria for Energy Pricing Policy
Author: Corazon Siddayao
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401198101
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 254
Book Description
The main part of this volume is composed of papers commissioned for the Energy Pricing Policy Workshop held at Bangkok from 8 to 11 May 1984, co-ordinated by the U nited Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the Resource Systems Institute of the East-West Center. The Workshop, which involved high-level policy planners was financially sponsored by several from several Asian developing countries, organizations: the ESCAP Regional Energy Development Programme funded by the United Nations Development Programme; the European Economic Community; the International Labour Organisation; and the International Development Research Centre. Publication of these papers has been supported by funds from the European Economic Community and the United States Agency for International Development. Preparation of the manuscripts for publication was undertaken at the East-West Center, through contribution in kind at the professional, editorial, and support staff levels. out of discussions at the Eighth Session of the The Workshop developed ESCAP Committee on Natural Resources, 27 October to 2 November 1981, where questions on resource pricing in general (as related to energy resources) and sectoral pricing policies for end-users were discussed in the context of demand management. It was recognized that, although much work had been done in the area, policy makers could seldorn obtain analytically supported, yet realistic, guidance concerning energy pricing questions. The emphasis of the Workshop was, therefore, on policy decision-making, and the application of theory to policy formulation in the energy pricing area.
