Book Description
Even though fractures in ship structures have been researched for over 40 years the continue to be bulk carriers lost at sea with no trace and unexpected fatigue failure in deep draft tank ships. It has been found on many occasions that failures, while unexpected, could have been prevented had currently known information been used in the design, construction, maintenance, and inspection of the ship. The Ship Structure Committee recognized this situation and requested the Marine Board of the National Research Council to convene a workshop to document the methods and educate the industry. This report includes all elements of the Symposium and Workshop on the Prevention of Fracture in Ship Structures held in March, 1995. It invited background papers were presented covering History and Background, Defining the Problem, and Current Practices in Other Industries. Then a series of technical papers on the state-of-the-art in areas of Design, Fatigue and Fracture, Reliability, Inspection, Loads and Materials and Fabrication were given to have the workshop members enter discussions on a level playing field. The first section of this report are the findings of the workshops with the final recommendations to the industry. The papers presented in the symposium follow that.

Fracture-control Guidelines for Welded Steel Ship Hulls

Book Description
The Report provides comprehensive toughness criteria for welded ship hulls that can be used for steels of all strength levels. Because of the fact that stress concentrations are always present in large complex welded structures and therefore high stresses as well as discontinuities or flaws will be present in welded ship hulls, primary emphasis in the proposed fracture-control guidelines is placed on the use of steels with moderate levels of notch-toughness and on the use of properly designed crack arresters. In general, concepts of fracture mechanics are used to develop the material toughness level that is required for fail-safe operation of welded ship hulls.

Book Description
Emphasizes applications of fracture mechanics to prevent fracture and fatigue failures in structures, rather than the theoretical aspects of fracture mechanics. The concepts of driving force and resistance force are used to differentiate between the mathematical side and the materials side. Case studies of actual failures are new to the third edition. Book Description
Can we design an oil tanker that meets our complex demands for environmental protection, economical operation, and crew safety? This volume evaluates and ranks a wide variety of tank ship hull designs proposed by experts around the world. Based on extensive research and studies, the book explores the implications of our rising demand for petroleum and increase in tanker operations; U.S. government regulations and U.S. Coast Guard policies regarding designs for new tank vessel construction; how new ship design would affect crew safety, maintenance, inspection, and other technical issues; the prospects for retrofitting existing tankers to reduce the risk of oil spills; and more. The conclusions and recommendations will be particularly important to maritime safety regulators in the United States and abroad; naval architects; ship operators and engineers; and officials in the petroleum, shipping, and marine insurance industries.

Book Description
In order to apply the damage tolerance design philosophy to design marine structures, accurate prediction of fatigue crack growth under service conditions is required. Now, more and more people have realized that only a fatigue life prediction method based on fatigue crack propagation (FCP) theory has the potential to explain various fatigue phenomena observed. In this book, the issues leading towards the development of a unified fatigue life prediction (UFLP) method based on FCP theory are addressed. Based on the philosophy of the UFLP method, the current inconsistency between fatigue design and inspection of marine structures could be resolved. This book presents the state-of-the-art and recent advances, including those by the authors, in fatigue studies. It is designed to lead the future directions and to provide a useful tool in many practical applications. It is intended to address to engineers, naval architects, research staff, professionals and graduates engaged in fatigue prevention design and survey of marine structures, in fatigue studies of materials and structures, in experimental laboratory research, in planning the repair and maintenance of existing structures, and in rule development. The book is also an effective educational aid in naval architecture, marine, civil and mechanical engineering. Prof. Weicheng Cui is the Dean of Hadal Science and Technology Research Center of Shanghai Ocean University, China. Dr. Xiaoping Huang is an associate professor of School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. Dr. Fang Wang is an associate professor of Hadal Science and Technology Research Center of Shanghai Ocean University, China.
