The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Amblyopia is considered one of the most common vision disorders in childhood. It has a prevalence of 1-5% among children, and is usually associated with refractive error, strabismus or any other ocular condition which interferes with formation of a clear retinal image (eg. infantile cataracts). Most amblyopic children require correction of the refractive error along with occlusion of non-amblyopic eye, and eventually this treatment could lead to a positive visual response in the amblyopic eye. Anisometropia refers to the condition where the refractive error between the two eyes is unequal. Purpose: To assess visual acuity improvement of the amblyopic eye between two different treatment groups. One treatment group was prescribed with full correction of anisometropia, and the other group had partial correction of refractive error. Methods: Retrospective study of subjects below the age of 17, who were treated for anisometropic amblyopia at NSU-OCO dating back to year 2002. Results: Both treatment groups (full and partial correction of refractive error) showed improvement of visual acuity over time. A t-test was used to prove that both treatment methods showed improvement of visual acuity as compared to the control group (the non-amblyopic eye). The partial correction group had p-value of 0.005697, and for full correction group p=0.060521. There appeared to be some improvement with full correction, but not significant. This leads to the conclusion that treatment with partial correction is equally as effective, or even better than full correction of anisometropic amblyopia.
