A strong preoccupation with the human body - often manifested in startling ways - is a characteristic shared by early modern Europeans and their present-day counterparts. Whilst modern manifestations of this interest include body piercing, tattoos, plastic surgery and eating disorders, early modern preoccupations encompassed such diverse phenomena as monstrous births and physical deformity, body snatching, public dissection, flagellation, judicial torture and public punishment. This volume explores such extreme manifestations of early modern bodily obsessions and fascinations, and their wider cultural significance. Agreeing that an interest in physical boundaries, extreme physical manifestations and situations developed and grew stronger during the early modern period, the essays in this volume investigate whether this interest can be traced in a wider range of cultural phenomena, and should therefore be given a prominent place in any future characterization of the early modern period. Also, I am going to give you some easily assimilated rhymes and reasons, psychologically speaking, why people are so crazy about weight loss. Is it obsession with self, steeped in narcissism, or low self-image or self-esteem, or absolutely no sense of self-respect or individual identity. And the only way a person can prove to himself and to the people around him that he is someone to be recognized and to be counted is to do something drastic or look drastic, in order to hold the three second attention span of the people around him or her? You have a point here. And as you read, you are going to understand the rationale behind why people behave the way they do, especially in matters of body image, weight loss, weight gain, dieting, and other such matters. So you are going to say, why then did I buy this book if you are not going to tell me how to keep my weight under control, easily, systematically, consistently, and permanently. Is this a sell, no pun intended. For you, I am going to give you my reason, yes, this book is going to tell you how to do these things, but in between, I am going to keep telling you why you should not lose weight on the say-so of some person who is obsessed with body image, diet, starvation, malnutrition of your body and they could not care less whether your body is subject to lifestyle diseases brought about through malnutrition and a very bad diet.

This book focuses on a selection of Machiavelli’s literary pieces, among which are the Mandragola, Belfagor, the Vita di Castruccio, the Epistola, and the Pastorale. As research into literary motif, it raises, across five essays, new evidence on Machiavelli’s sources and suggestions as to where he drew from them (including the works of Livy, Virgil, and Boccaccio). In Medicating Race, Anne Pollock traces the intersecting discourses of race, pharmaceuticals, and heart disease in the United States over the past century, from the founding of cardiology through the FDA's approval of BiDil, the first drug sanctioned for use in a specific race. She examines wide-ranging aspects of the dynamic interplay of race and heart disease: articulations, among the founders of American cardiology, of heart disease as a modern, and therefore white, illness; constructions of "normal" populations in epidemiological research, including the influential Framingham Heart Study; debates about the distinctiveness African American hypertension, which turn on disparate yet intersecting arguments about genetic legacies of slavery and the comparative efficacy of generic drugs; and physician advocacy for the urgent needs of black patients on professional, scientific, and social justice grounds. Ultimately, Pollock insists that those grappling with the meaning of racialized medical technologies must consider not only the troubled history of race and biomedicine but also its fraught yet vital present. Medical treatment should be seen as a site of, rather than an alternative to, political and social contestation. The aim of scholarly analysis should not be to settle matters of race and genetics, but to hold medicine more broadly accountable to truth and justice.
