The difference in relief within the badland formation is approximately 450 feet. The channel gradient of the Little Missouri is about 5 feet per mile and throughout its length the river follows a meandering course. Sandbars. Pools and shallow areas are common and may change position from year to year. Figure 1 illustrates the broad topographic divisions within the basin.
