Potential Climate Change Effects on Great Lakes Hydrodynamics and Water Quality
Author: David C. L. Lam
Publisher: ASCE Publications
ISBN: 9780784474686
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 236
Book Description
This report provides a state-of-the-art review of the climate change effects on lake hydrodynamics and water quality. Most of the engineering cases in this book deal with the ability of existing infrastructure to cope with extreme weather conditions. The case studies are intended to illustrate the advancement in modeling research on lake hydrodynamics, thermal stratification, pollutant transport, and water quality by highlighting the climate change aspects in the application of these techniques. Topics include climate and lake responses, lake thermodynamics, large-scale circulation, wind-waves on large lakes, great lakes ice cover, and water quality.

Analysis of Ecological Systems: State-of-the-Art in Ecological Modelling
Author: W.K. Lauenroth
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0444597654
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 995
Book Description
The International Society for Ecological Modelling (ISEM) sponsors conferences, workshops and training courses with the aim of advancing the development of ecological and environmental modelling. The 3rd International Conference on the state-of-the-art in ecological modelling was sponsored by the ISEM in cooperation with the National Park Service Water Resources Laboratory and hosted by the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory at Colorado State University. Its theme was the application of ecological modelling to environmental management and this book contains the full texts of the three invited papers presented in the five general sessions, plus the final summaries and syntheses of the topics covered during those sessions.

Report on Modeling the Loading-concentration Relationship for Critical Pollutants in the Great Lakes
Author: Great Lakes Water Quality Board. Toxic Substances Committee. Task Force on Chemical Loadings
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Environmental chemistry
Languages : en
Pages : 298
Book Description
Exploratory applications of mass balance modeling of PCB's in Lake Ontario. It is widely accepted that environmental fate models, in the form of mass balances or budgets, can play a useful role in managing the issue of the presence of toxic organic chemicals in the Great Lakes. Under the aegis of the IJC, three independant modelling efforts were produced in order to determine if the models gave similar, useful and understandable results. These groups developed different models of the fate of the PCB's in the water column, sediment and biota of Lake Ontario and projected the response of the lake to specified changes in PCB loading. These reports, reproduced in extenso in this volume, were evaluated during a workshop held in 1987 by scientists who also addressed their application and management implications. The Task Force of the IJC presents its views, conclusions and recommendations.

Chemical Dynamics in Freshwater Ecosystems
Author: Frank A.P.C. Gobas
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351087428
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 316
Book Description
Chemical Dynamics in Freshwater Ecosystems reviews the processes that control the distribution and impacts of chemical substances discharged into freshwater aquatic environments. The book focuses on the relationships between chemical emissions and the resulting ambient concentration in water, sediments, fish, benthos, plants, and other components of real aquatic ecosystems. Hydrodynamics, sediment dynamics, chemical fate processes, bioaccumulation, and food-chain transfer are major topics discussed in the book. Case studies and models are used to illustrate how quantitative predictions of chemical dynamics and behavior in the aquatic environment can be made. Chemical Dynamics in Freshwater Ecosystems is an excellent reference for aquatic toxicologists, wildlife toxicologists, wildlife biologists, environmental chemists, governmental regulators, environmental modelers, consultants, and students studying the effects of chemicals on aquatic environments.
