New Eucharistic Prayers
Author: Frank C. Senn
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1597525669
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 269
Book Description
There are fifty-two eucharistic prayers studied in this book: the official texts of the Roman Catholic Church, the Episcopal Church in the U.S., several Lutheran Churches in North America, the United Methodist Church, and the Presbyterian Church (USA). The contributors to this volume are scholars from these church bodies who participated in the work of the Eucharistic Prayer Study Group of the North American Academy of Liturgy, an ecumenical professional society of liturgists. This book tells the story of how these prayers developed. It illustrates the way the various churches dealt with historical traditions and contemporary concerns, worship and culture, piety and theology. The essays in the second part of the book analyze the component parts of the prayers, looking at them across the ecumenical spectrum of the texts. They reveal both an impressive consensus on what should go into the eucharistic prayers, as well as many unresolved questions. The final part of the book deals with this ongoing agenda.

Common Prayer
Author: Ramie Targoff
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 9780226789682
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 184
Book Description
Common Prayer explores the relationship between prayer and poetry in the century following the Protestant Reformation. Ramie Targoff challenges the conventional and largely misleading distinctions between the ritualized world of Catholicism and the more individualistic focus of Protestantism. Early modern England, she demonstrates, was characterized less by the triumph of religious interiority than by efforts to shape public forms of devotion. This provocatively revisionist argument will have major implications for early modern studies. Through readings of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Richard Hooker's Lawes of Ecclesiastical Politie, Philip Sidney's Apology for Poetry and his translations of the Psalms, John Donne's sermons and poems, and George Herbert's The Temple, Targoff uncovers the period's pervasive and often surprising interest in cultivating public and formalized models of worship. At the heart of this study lies an original and daring approach to understanding the origins of devotional poetry; Targoff shows how the projects of composing eloquent verse and improving liturgical worship come to be deeply intertwined. New literary practices, then, became a powerful means of forging common prayer, or controlling private and otherwise unmanageable expressions of faith.

Daily, Sabbath, and Festival Prayers in the Dead Sea Scrolls
Author: Daniel K. Falk
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004350284
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 322
Book Description
All the evidence for daily, sabbath, and festival prayers in the Qumran scrolls is analysed in detail, document by document. On the basis of formal features and social-liturgical setting, these prayers are compared with each other to uncover divergent prayer traditions. Comparative material beyond the scrolls is used to reassess their place in the development of Jewish prayer. Evidence for prayers of different origin found at Qumran is important for reconsidering the nature of the scrolls, the community(s) which used them, and the history of Jewish liturgy. For several texts significant new reconstructions are offered.
