Book Description
All know that children like pictures but we fear very few realize how lasting is the impression they make upon minds and hearts. Pictures that awaken foolish, impure or unkind thoughts have a tendency to poison the mind and destroy the soul forever. On the other hand, the pictures in this book will suggest thoughts of God and heaven and awaken desires to live pure lives which will sooner or later result in the salvation of many of our young readers.-from "Prefatory Note"This fully illustrated 1895 book of religious stories and inspiration for children is chock full of stimulating lessons and pointed tales, including those of: .The Converted Infidel. The Golden Rule Exemplified. The Dying Child's Prayer for Her Drunken Father. The Little Swiss Girl, Who Died to Save Her Father's Life.Little Jennie's Sickness and Death. How Three Sunday School Children Met Their Fate."I'll Never Steal Again-If Father Kills Me for It."Triumphant Death of a Little Child.and many more.SOLOMON BENJAMIN SHAW also wrote The Great Revival in Wales (1905).

Book Description
By the end of the 19th century, the ascendance of a naturalistic worldview had made it increasingly difficult for many educated Christians to believe in a God who intervened in the natural world. At the same time, many in the emerging middle-class culture saw themselves as too busy to practice the rigorous devotions of their ancestors. In this book, Rick Ostrander explores the attempts of American Protestants to articulate a convincing and satisfying ethic of prayer in these changing circumstances. Ostrander shows that, in response to the assault on petitionary prayer by naturalistic scientists, American Evangelicals articulated a highly supernatural ethic of prayer and co-opted the "scientific method" to defend their stance, recording and cataloging numerous answers to prayer as empirical proof of prayer's efficacy. Liberal Protestants, on the other hand, with their desire to adapt to modern thought, gradually abandoned traditional belief in petitionary prayer. The debate about the efficacy of petitionary prayer and other "alternative therapies" in mental and physical healing has taken on new vigor today; this timely and engagingly written work not only chronicles the history of that debate, but serves to illuminate the issues that are at stake.

Book Description
Philip Yancey probes the very heartbeat of our relationship with God: prayer. What is prayer? Does it change God's mind or ours or both? This book is an invitation to communicate with God the Father who invites us into an eternal partnership through prayer. Polls reveal that 90 percent of people pray. Yet prayer, which should be the most nourishing and uplifting time of the believer's day, can also be frustrating, confusing, and fraught with mystery. Writing as a fellow pilgrim, bestselling author of What's So Amazing About Grace? Philip Yancey probes such questions as: Is God listening? What should I pray for? If God knows everything, what's the point of prayer? If my prayers go unanswered, is there something wrong with my faith? Why does God sometimes seem close and sometimes seem far away? How can I make prayer more satisfying? In this powerful classic of spiritual insight and investigation, Yancey tackles the tough questions about the mystery of prayer and, in the process, comes up with a fresh new approach to this timeless topic. "I have learned to pray as a privilege, not a duty," writes Yancey, and he invites you to join him on this all-important journey.
