La Ecología Oceánica es una de las pocas asignaturas de vocación específicamente marina que se imparten en la Universidad de Barcelona, y tiene como objetivo presentar las características básicas de los procesos ecológicos en el mar. La enseñanza práctica de las ciencias marinas siempre entraña ciertas dificultades, por el hecho de desarrollarse en un medio dónde no siempre es fácil, ni mucho menos cómodo, acceder. En este manual se describen algunos planteamientos experimentales plenamente realizables, que ilustran aspectos teórico-prácticos de campos muy distintos dentro de la ecología marina; a la vez, incluye los protocolos necesarios para su desarrollo, y claves para el tratamiento e interpretación de los resultados. El texto se estructura alrededor de cuatro grandes temas: la hidrografía de un sistema de mezcla entre aguas continentales y aguas marinas (capítulo I), la migración vertical del zooplancton (capítulo II), la ecología trófica de una comunidad bentónica mediterránea (capítulo III) y la ecofisiología de macroalgas (capítulo IV). La obra está concebida tanto para ser útil como guión de consulta durante la realización de las prácticas como para usarse como texto complementario de la asignatura aún sin efectuar directamente las tareas que en él se describen.
