Principles of electrical design for permanent magnet generators are discussed, followed by electrical, thermal and structural generator design and systems integration. A review of power electronic converter technology and power electronic converter systems for direct drive renewable energy applications is then conducted. Part two then focuses on wind and marine applications, beginning with a commercial overview of wind turbine drive systems and an introduction to direct drive wave energy conversion systems. The commercial application of these technologies is investigated via case studies on the permanent magnet direct drive generator in the Zephyros wind turbine, and the Archimedes Wave Swing (AWS) direct drive wave energy pilot plant. Finally, the book concludes by exploring the application of high-temperature superconducting machines to direct drive renewable energy systems. With its distinguished editors and international team of expert contributors, Electrical drives for direct drive renewable energy systems provides a comprehensive review of key technologies for anyone involved with or interested in the design, construction, operation, development and optimisation of direct drive wind and marine energy systems. - An authorative guide to the design, development and operation of gearless direct drives - Discusses the principles of electrical design for permanent magnet generators and electrical, thermal and structural generator design and systems integration - Investigates the commercial applications of wind turbine drive systems

Control of Multiphase Machines and Drives
Author: Federico Barrero
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3039281364
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 146
Book Description
With the growing interest in electrical machines in recent times, the multiphase machine field has developed into a fascinating research area. Their intrinsic features (power splitting, better fault tolerance, or lower torque ripple) make them an appealing competitor to conventional three-phase machines. Multiphase electric drives have been recently used in applications where fault tolerance and continuous operation of the drive are required. However, the difficulties in extending the three-phase conventional current regulation and control structure to multiphase systems still limit their broad applicability in industry solutions. The main objective of this book is to illustrate new advances, developments, and applications in the field of multiphase machines and drives, while exposing these advances, developments, and applications to the scientific community and industry.

Energy Efficiency in Electric Devices, Machines and Drives
Author: Gorazd Štumberger
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3039363565
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 218
Book Description
This Special Issue deals with improvements in the energy efficiency of electric devices, machines, and drives, which are achieved through improvements in the design, modelling, control, and operation of the system. Properly sized and placed coils of a welding transformer can reduce the required iron core size and improve the efficiency of the welding system operation. New structures of the single-phase field excited flux switching machine improve its performance in terms of torque, while having higher back-EMF and unbalanced electromagnetic forces. A properly designed rotor notch reduces the torque ripple and cogging torque of interior permanent magnet motors for the drive platform of electric vehicles, resulting in lower vibrations and noise. In the field of modelling, the torque estimation of a Halbach array surface permanent magnet motor with a non-overlapping winding layout was improved by introducing an analytical two-dimensional subdomain model. A general method for determining the magnetically nonlinear two-axis dynamic models of rotary and linear synchronous reluctance machines and synchronous permanent magnet machines is introduced that considers the effects of slotting, mutual interaction between the slots and permanent magnets, saturation, cross saturation, and end effects. Advanced modern control solutions, such as neural network-based model reference adaptive control, fuzzy control, senseless control, torque/speed tracking control derived from the 3D non-holonomic integrator, including drift terms, maximum torque per ampere, and maximum efficiency characteristics, are applied to improve drive performance and overall system operation.

Power Electronic Converters for Microgrids
Author: Suleiman M. Sharkh
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470828323
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 378
Book Description
As concerns about climate change, energy prices, and energy security loom, regulatory and research communities have shown growing interest in alternative energy sources and their integration into distributed energy systems. However, many of the candidate microgeneration and associated storage systems cannot be readily interfaced to the 50/60 Hz grid. In Power Electronic Converters for Microgrids, Sharkh and Abu-Sara introduce the basics and practical concerns of analyzing and designing such micro-generation grid interface systems. Readers will become familiar with methods for stably feeding the larger grid, importing from the grid to charge on-site storage, disconnecting from the grid in case of grid failure, as well as connect multiple microgrids while sharing their loads appropriately. Sharkh and Abu-Sara introduce not only the larger context of the technology, but also present potential future applications, along with detailed case studies and tutorials to help the reader effectively engineer microgrid systems.
