To the best of the author's knowledge, this study, conducted from July, 1968 to June, 1969, is the first comprehensive sociological survey of an African university. This study did not begin with a set of specific hypotheses to be tested, nor does the research include everything of conceivable relevance to the University of Ilosho (U .I.). Instead, the focus is on the political structure of U.I., on social stratification and mobility, and on problems of ethnicity. These closely interrelated problems are of great importance to the development of Nigeria, where U .I. is located.

In Black Privilege, Cassi Pittman Claytor examines how this economically advantaged group experiences privilege, having credentials that grant them access to elite spaces and resources with which they can purchase luxuries, while still confronting persistent anti-black bias and racial stigma. Besides the ongoing concern with the epistemological and theoretical hegemony of the West in African academic practice, the book aims at understanding how knowledge is produced and controlled through the interplay of the politics of knowledge and current intellectual discourses in universities in Africa. In this regard, the book calls for African universities to relocate from the position of object to subject in order to gain a form of liberated epistemological voice more responsive to the social and economic complexities of the continent. In itself, this is a critical exposé of contemporary practices in knowledge advancement in the continent. Broadly the book addresses the following questions: How can African universities reinvent knowledge production and dissemination in the face of the dominant Eurocentricism so pervasive and characteristic of academic practice in Africa to enhance their relevance to the contexts in which they operate?
