Book Description
Academic libraries are facing uncertain times. The international higher education environment is very volatile and academic libraries and librarians can play a major role in helping to strategically position their parent institution within it. In doing so, there needs to be clarity as to what the position of the academic library is with regard to the role and function it has within the university and how library leadership can have pan-institutional influence and impact. There are several ways in which the academic library can position itself and this collection demonstrates many of these. Strategic alignment with the university and its mission is a fundamental part of successful positioning, as is being flexible, adaptable and responsive to changing needs, requirements and expectations. Developments in research support and scholarly communications, as well as super-convergences with other academic support departments, are examples of such responsiveness. These topics along with other emerging themes, such as library functions and institutional partnerships and collaborations, are all discussed in the book and provide the reader with a rich variety of reflections and case studies on how academic libraries, from across the globe, have addressed their position within their institution. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal New Review of Academic Librarianship.

Book Description
Successful Fundraising for the Academic Library: Philanthropy in Higher Education covers fundraising, a task that is often grouped into a combination role that may include, for example, the university museum or performance venue, thus diluting the opportunity for successful fundraising. Because the traditional model for higher education fundraising entails the cultivation of alumni from specific departments and colleges, the library is traditionally left out, often becoming a low-performing development area with smaller appropriations for fundraising positions. Most higher education development professionals consider the library fundraising position a stepping stone into another position with higher pay and more potential for professional advancement down the road rather than as a focus for their career. However, for universities that invest in development professionals who know how to leverage the mission of libraries to the larger alumni and friend community, the results include innovative and successful approaches to messaging that resonates with donors. This book provides information that applies to all fundraising professionals and academic leaders looking to strengthen their programs with philanthropic support, even those beyond university libraries. - Makes the case for university libraries as a viable avenue for donor engagement that translates to all academic areas of higher education fundraising - Highlights the importance of collaborative relationships and fundraising strategies with academic leaders, donors, and fundraising staff - Outlines strategies that have resulted in fundraising success for academic and research libraries at universities of varying size and culture

The authors’broad range of professional experience offers you unique insight on a management position that is truly in transition. Get inside seasoned professionals’heads to save time, effort, and money for yourself and your library. See what these experienced directors did right . . . and learn from their mistakes. The Academic Library Director is the resource that: Considers the challenges of leading an academic library through the transition period between permanent directors; lists the challenges met by interim directors and presents their advice for succeeding in this difficult role. Studies the career paths for academic library directors based on a survey of 21 library directors across the country, with a focus on factors such as gender, education, age, tenure, professional experience, and internal vs. external candidates. Identifies critical criteria for recruiting library leaders for the 21st century. Should your library hire a manager or a leader? Provides a unique, non-librarian perspective on the establishment of a newly configured position of Vice Provost for Information and Dean of University Libraries at a large university. Discusses the perceptions recently appointed academic library directors have about collegiate life vis à vis the realities they’ve encountered since assuming their positions. Shows how a library can thrive in a not-for-profit culture by embracing for-profit principles. The Academic Library Director: Reflections on a Position in Transition will help prepare you and your library for the only sure thing in the future--change. Successful library directors will be the ones who can recognize and thrive on the “management of change.” Unsuccessful directors will find themselves unable to adapt. Use this book to ensure your library comes out on the right side of the line.

Book Description
This open access collection examines how higher education responds to the demands of the automation economy and the fourth industrial revolution. Considering significant trends in how people are learning, coupled with the ways in which different higher education institutions and education stakeholders are implementing adaptations, it looks at new programs and technological advances that are changing how and why we teach and learn. The book addresses trends in liberal arts integration of STEM innovations, the changing role of libraries in the digital age, global trends in youth mobility, and the development of lifelong learning programs. This is coupled with case study assessments of the various ways China, Singapore, South Africa and Costa Rica are preparing their populations for significant shifts in labour market demands – shifts that are already underway. Offering examples of new frameworks in which collaboration between government, industry, and higher education institutions can prevent lagging behind in this fast changing environment, this book is a key read for anyone wanting to understand how the world should respond to the radical technological shifts underway on the frontline of higher education.
