Blasing shows how four major postwar poets--Frank O'Hara, Elizabeth Bishop, John Ashbery, and James Merrill--cannot be read as politically conservative because formally traditional or vice versa. Examining William Carlos Williams's importance for postmodern poetry, it underscores how his literary reputation has figured prominently in recent reconsiderations of twentieth-century American literary history.
