Book Description
Since nuclear magnetic resonance ''chemical shifts'' are considered to be good measures of electron densities in molecules, the extent to which they can be correlated with the polarographic half-wave potentials of organic compounds has been surveyed. To extend the applicability and interpretation of the proposed correlation, parallel correlatioan of E, with Hammett's sigma and Taft's sigma parameters were made, since both of the latter are also regarded as indication of electronic distrinution at the reactive center. The data in general support the view that changes in half-wave potential with structure are due to both electronic and steric effects, as well as perhaps to adsorption phenomena. Significantly, NMR data obtained with one type of substituent could be correlated with E/sub 1/2 data for a similar type of substituent. New NMR data for aliphatic nitro and halogen compounds are reported. (auth).

Book Description
Since A. Kowalsky's first report of the spectrum of cytochrome c in 1965, interest in the detection, assignment and interpretation of paramagnetic molecules has surged, especially in the last decade. Two classes of systems have played a key role in the development of the field: heme proteins and iron-sulfur proteins. These two systems are unique in many respects, one of which is that they contain well-defined chromophores, each of which can be studied in detail outside the protein matrix. They are the most successfully studied macromolecules, and the first eight and last six of the seventeen contributions to this book deal with heme and/or iron-sulfur proteins. The middle three chapters survey the progress on, and significant promise of, more difficult systems which do not possess a chromophore, but which have nevertheless yielded remarkable insights into their structure.

Book Description
Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is presently going through an explosive phase of development. This has been brought about largely on account of the advent of Fourier transform NMR spectrometers linked to powerful microcomputers which have opened up a whole new world for structural chemists and biochemists. This is exemplified by a host of publications, especially on new pulse sequences, which continue to provide new exciting modifications for recording two-dimensional NMR. Moreover, NMR is no longer confined to structural chemists but has moved firmly into the area of medicine as a powerful nondestructive body scanning technique. With this background, I felt that there was need for a text which would provide a fairly comprehensive account of the important features of 1 H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy in one book, as well as make available an up-to-date account of recent developments of new pulse sequences, with particular reference to 2D-NMR spectroscopy. Since this book is written for students of chemistry and biochemistry as well as for biology students who have chemistry as a subsidiary, it was decided to avoid a complex mathematical treatment and to present, as far as possible without oversimplification, a qualitative account of 1 H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy as it is today. I hope that the book satisfactorily meets these objectives.

Book Description
As a spectroscopic method, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) has seen spectacular growth over the past two decades, both as a technique and in its applications. Today the applications of NMR span a wide range of scientific disciplines, from physics to biology to medicine. Each volume of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance comprises a combination of annual and biennial reports which together provide comprehensive of the literature on this topic. This Specialist Periodical Report reflects the growing volume of published work involving NMR techniques and applications, in particular NMR of natural macromolecules which is covered in two reports: "NMR of Proteins and Acids" and "NMR of Carbohydrates, Lipids and Membranes". For those wanting to become rapidly acquainted with specific areas of NMR, this title provides unrivalled scope of coverage. Seasoned practitioners of NMR will find this an in valuable source of current methods and applications. Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage in major areas of chemical research. Compiled by teams of leading authorities in the relevant subject areas, the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, with regular, in-depth accounts of progress in particular fields of chemistry. Subject coverage within different volumes of a given title is similar and publication is on an annual or biennial basis.
