Book Description
The energy throughput of an interferometer is calculated for the case where an unsupported thin film is used as a beamsplitter. The polarization of the beam toward the detector is calculated, and it is shown that by setting the beamsplitter at the Brewster angle rather than at the usual 45 degrees, a completely polarized output beam can be produced with very little loss of energy. The theoretical and experimental results are in good agreement. (Author).

Principles and Applications of Polarization-Division Interferometry
Author: Prasad L. Polavarapu
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 9780471974208
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 222
Book Description
Principles and Applications of Polarization-Division Interferometry Prasad L. Polavarapu Department of Chemistry, Vanderbilt University, USA Polarization-division interferometers have greatly increased the applications of infrared spectroscopy in recent years. This first dedicated book on the topic includes a chapter on the principles of polarization-division interferometric spectrometry followed by four chapters highlighting the range of applications of this important technique. Applications as diverse as the verification of the Big Bang theory and material characterization are discussed by leading researchers in their respective fields, so the book as a whole serves as a state of the art reference on the subject. The editor, Professor Prasad Polavarapu, has carried out important research in this area including the development of a Martin-Puplett interferometer. He has gathered together an international group of contributors of world-wide renown.

Vibrational Spectra: Principles and Applications with Emphasis on Optical Activity
Author: P.L. Polavarapu
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080543537
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 427
Book Description
This book originated out of a desire to combine topics on vibrational absorption, Raman scattering, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and Raman optical activity (VROA) into one source. The theoretical details of these processes are presented in ten different chapters. Using dispersive and Fourier transform techniques, the instrumentation involved in these spectral measurements are given in three chapters. Major emphasis is placed on the newer techniques, i.e. VCD and VROA, with the conventional vibrational absorption and vibrational Raman scattering methods incorporated as natural parts of the newer methods.Features of this book:• Comprehensive coverage of vibrational circular dichroism and vibrational Raman optical activity.• Coverage of theoretical and instrumental details.• A comprehensive survey of VCD and VROA applications is included, so that the reader can get an overview of theory, instrumentation and applications in one source. The topics covered are of an advanced level, which makes this book invaluable for graduate students and practising scientists in vibrational spectroscopy.

Far-Infrared Properties of Solids
Author: S. Mitra
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468418637
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 613
Book Description
This book provides an account of modern aspects relating far infrared radiation to properties of solids; it encompasses both theoretical and experimental considerations. Written at the gradu ate level, it attempts a threefold purpose; an indication of the breadth of the subject, an in-depth examination of important areas, and reference material to complement a text for a course. The treatment and organization of material here is compatible with a preceding volume of this series on "Optical Properties of Solids." Chapters 1-6 present material concerned principally with experimental considerations necessary to the carrying out of meas urements in the far infrared spectral region. They also serve to provide considerable introductory material for the remaining chap ters which deal with various areas that offer theoretical treat ments utilizing and understanding far infrared properties of solids. Several lectures presented at the Institute could not be in cluded in this book for two reasons: (i) Final versions of the lecture notes suitable for publication never arrived from several lecturers; (ii) Some materials were deliberately left out fro~ this book as they were also presented at an earlier NATO Institute and form part of a preceding volume edited by us in this series. In particular, it is recommended that Chapters 14 and 15, viz., in frared and Raman spectra due to lattice vibrations by S. S. Mitra and impurity induced lattice absorption by L. Genzel in "Optical Properties of Solids'· be read concurrently with the present volume.

Spectroscopy of the earth's Atmosphere and interstellar Medium
Author: K.N. Rao
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0323146759
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 539
Book Description
Spectroscopy of the Earth's Atmosphere and Interstellar Medium focuses on the characteristics of the electromagnetic spectrum of the Earth's atmosphere in the far-infrared and microwave regions. It discusses the modes of observation in field measurements and reviews the two techniques used in the spectral region. Organized into six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the effect of water-vapor absorption, followed by a discussion on the two frequently used method for deriving atmospheric parameters from high-resolution infrared atmospheric spectra, namely, the equivalent width (EW) technique and the nonlinear least-square fitting (NLSF). Other chapters consider the mechanisms by which interstellar clouds are formed. In addition, the book explores the composition of interstellar clouds, ion-molecule reactions, and the formation of stars. This book will be useful to anyone involved in, or interested in learning more about the field of atmospheric spectroscopy, including scientists, aeronomers, astronomers, astrophysicists, and students.
