Neoliberalism has brought about rural depopulation in the northern hemisphere, rising rural poverty in the southern, and environmental problems all around the farming world. Farmgate prices have stagnated since the 1980s, while market-driven growth has encouraged production of agricultural exports and increasing use of chemical inputs. Trade liberalization is often biased against southern and small farmers, while the power of transnational corporations in agricultural trade and farm technology has grown by leaps and bounds. The corporate-driven GM-food revolution has had little positive effect on farm livelihoods or food security. The book calls for farm policies founded on farmer-led food security and a democratization of the global institutions that have had such detrimental effects.

A Norfolk farmer's son, Brian played a key role in developing agricultural education in Suffolk from the 1960s onwards. For many years he was the vice-principal of the Otley Agricultural College where he headed the agricultural engineering section. He established the annual 'Power in Action' demonstrations in which the latest farm machinery is put through its paces and he campaigned vigorously for improved farm safety, serving on the Suffolk Farm Safety Committee. He is secretary of the Suffolk Farm Machinery Club. In 1993 he retired from Otley College and was created a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his services to agriculture. George Washington spent more of his working life farming than he did at war or in political office. A tireless experimentalist, Washington pulled up his tobacco and switched to wheat production, leading the way for the rest of the country.
