The addition of organic residues to the soil may modify the amounts of plant available phosphorus (P) found in this ssytem. These studies were undertaken to evaluate the suitability of the sorption isotherm technique for estimating the amounts of inorganic P required for optimum plant growth, the correlation of P availability with the amount of P extracted by three chemical methods, and with the activity of two phosphatase enzymes, when soils were amended with organic materials. Acid phosphatase and phosphodiesterase activities were also compared with the P availability to plants. Soil phosphodiesterase activity correlated better with corn yield and plant uptake than acid phosphatase activity. The correlation of phosphodiesterase activity with microbial activity might be used to indicate the contribution of the soil organic P pool in the P supply to the plant.

Lysimeter experiments in which crops were grown on agricultural soils treated with anaerobically digested sewage sludges (from plants where phosphorus removal was being practised using metal salts) were initiated in 1972 and 1973. Alum, iron and lime treated fluid sludges were added to loamy sand and silt loam soils vegetated with orchard grass. Similarly, alum, iron and lime treated air-dried sludges were added to sand and clay soils and wheat crops were grown. The high application rates of fluid and air-dried sludges ranged From 32 to 76 and 47 to 144 tons dry wt/ha/yr, respectively. The metal loadings approximated the recommended maxima for Ontario agricultural land. The lower rates were one-third and two-thirds of the high rates. The results of these experiments are presented and compared to results from field and greenhouse studies. There was no evidence that the aluminum, iron or lime in the digested sludges was detrimental to crop production or plant tissue quality. Orchard grass yields from the f1uid sludge experiment appeared to be related to nitrogen avai1abi1ity. Ìn general t land application of sewage sludges at rates sufficient to supply the crop uptake of N and P would limit soil heavy metal loadings to acceptable levels for the sludges used in these lysimeter studies.

Prepared by the Task Committee on Land Application of Sludge of the Committee on Water Pollution Management of the Environmental Engineering Division of ASCE. This report presents research on the land application of wastewater sludge, especially quantitative and qualitative aspects of soil-sludge interaction. Each year, approximately 6.2 million dry metric tons of wastewater sludge are produced by municipal wastewater treatment facilities in the United States. The annual sludge production is expected to reach 12 million dry metric tons by the year 2000. Sludge use and disposal options include incineration, ocean disposal, marketing of processed sludge, landfilling, and land application. Land application of sludge is achieved by spreading the sludge over the ground surface or incorporating it within the topsoil by injection, disking, or plowing. Sludge is applied to agricultural and forest lands for its nutrient value and to disturbed areas for soil amendment and reclamation purposes. At present, land application is the logical alternative because of its environmental and economic advantages over the other methods. Topics include: mechanisms for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus, the role of trace elements, hydrologic effects of soil-sludge interaction, use of municipal sludge to reclaim mined land, and health effects. The report concludes with recommendations for future research.
