Book Description
This is a story of two young men who first met when they were at art school in their midteens. The story is set in a period between the late 50s and early 60s. Both young men are called up to do their national service. The narrator, Christopher, who is the less adventurous and romantic of the two, does his military service in England, only seventy miles from his home so that he is able to visit his parents and girlfriend on frequent weekend passes. Simon, the other young man, is posted to Cyprus at a time when there is much unrest as it struggles to establish its independence from British rule. During his time there, he is involved in the interrogation of Cypriots, who are suspected of activity against the British. Later, some of the suspects are shipped to a British army base in Egypt, where they are interrogated more severely. He eventually refuses to continue with his part in this in spite of a direct order from his commanding officer. He is charged with disobeying a direct order, and as he is nearly at the end of his two year service, he is shipped back to England, initially to be court-martialed but is finally released with a severe reprimand. He is much embittered by this experience.

Lailah solves her problem with help from the school librarian and her teacher and in doing so learns that she can make new friends who respect her beliefs. This gentle, moving story from first-time author Reem Faruqi comes to life in Lea Lyon’s vibrant illustrations. Lyon uses decorative arabesque borders on intermittent spreads to contrast the ordered patterns of Islamic observances with the unbounded rhythms of American school days. Fountas & Pinnell Level N

Book Description
The book is a prime illustration of the difficulties and trials of putting on a festival. Often, what can go wrong does go wrong, so one needs to be aware of all the eventualities in Festival Planning, both planned and unplanned. The authors have spent many hours developing and inserting Gant charts (step by step tasks in pull out sections) to assist future festival planners should you "volunteer" to chair a festival for your church, school, or civic organization. The goal of the book is to make your efforts financially successful, the children happy, and end on target which should ultimately please your pastor, minister, or civic head.

Book Description
In this new book, Tariq Ramadan argues that it is crucial to find theoretical and practical solutions that will enable Western Muslims to remain faithful to Islamic ethics while fully living within their societies and their time. He notes that Muslim scholars often refer to the notion of ijtihad (critical and renewed reading of the foundational texts) as the only way for Muslims to take up these modern challenges. But, Ramadan argues, in practice such readings have effectively reached the limits of their ability to serve the faithful in the West as well as the East. In this book he sets forward a radical new concept of ijtihad, which puts context -- including the knowledge derived from the hard and human sciences, cultures and their geographic and historical contingencies -- on an equal footing with the scriptures as a source of Islamic law.
