Book Description
More than just a story about the personal journey of one of South Africa's most beloved music icons, this extraordinary memoir of PJ Powers - or Thandeka, as she was affectionately renamed by Soweto crowds - is set against the turbulent backdrop of South Africa's recent political history. It features a gallery of political leaders and international celebrities, including the likes of Nelson Mandela, Graça Machel, Chris Hani, Joaquim Chissano, Queen Elizabeth II, Brenda Fassie, Sharon Stone and Robert De Niro. On Republic Day 1982, a white rock and roll band called Hotline, wearing stonewashed jeans and sporting big hair, took an accidental sho't left into Soweto - a detour that forever changed the life of their lead singer, PJ Powers. Hotline was the first all-white rock and roll band to "cross over" into highly segregated apartheid South Africa, making international headlines in the process. The prolific Powers went on to accomplish extraordinary heights as a solo artist with countless gold and platinum discs. Here I Am, written with Marianne Thamm, is an intimate and hilarious account of the life and times of one of this country's most recognisable and enduring performers. From the dizzying heights of international stardom to the dark depths of her struggle with alcohol, this is a must-read to explore the heady mix of politics and music of the time.

Book Description
"I owe it to many people, and to myself, to set the record straight. There have been many versions of parts of the story in the press over the years, many lies overlaid with truths and truths overlaid with lies. Much of the truth is just a palimpsest, an echo that changes even in the act of repeating it, but this is my story." In the dying years of apartheid, a most extraordinary story hit the headlines. Agent Olivia Forsyth had escaped from ANC imprisonment in Angola. Upon her return home she was feted as a hero by the government. In a flurry of media appearances and press releases, Forsyth claimed to have infiltrated the ANC and passed on vital information. Is that what really happened? In the world of espionage, truth is the first victim and nothing is as it seems. Here, for the first time and in her own words, South Africa's most notorious female spy during apartheid lays bare the story of her life. Olivia Forsyth was also known as agent RS407, codename Lara, lieutenant in the Security Branch of the South Africa Police, ANC comrade Helen Bronson, prisoner Thandeka, alias Christine Smith.

Book Description
A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book Description
Hailed by Frank O’Connor as one of “the greatest living storytellers,” J. F. Powers, who died in 1999, stands with Eudora Welty, Flannery O’Connor, and Raymond Carver among the authors who have given the short story an unmistakably American cast. In three slim collections of perfectly crafted stories, published over a period of some thirty years and brought together here in a single volume for the first time, Powers wrote about many things: baseball and jazz, race riots and lynchings, the Great Depression, and the flight to the suburbs. His greatest subject, however—and one that was uniquely his—was the life of priests in Chicago and the Midwest. Powers’s thoroughly human priests, who include do-gooders, gladhanders, wheeler-dealers, petty tyrants, and even the odd saint, struggle to keep up with the Joneses in a country unabashedly devoted to consumption. These beautifully written, deeply sympathetic, and very funny stories are an unforgettable record of the precarious balancing act that is American life.

Book Description
During 1999 I was a normal, part time self employed, happily married, standard South African guy. 38 years old with a great future planned. I had most of the same hang ups that plagued everybody, mid month crisis and month end blues. My wife, step daughters, mother in law and myself, lived in the suburbs of Kempton Park, happily going about our daily business with minimal stress levels. During July 1999, I was temporally managing a hardware store in Greenside when the owner had a lump removed from his chest. The lump proved to be malignant but had not spread. I am fair haired and have a light skin complexion, and as I had been working outdoors repairing and installing irrigation systems, some of my freckles became dark and suspicious and as Mister Elsbach, the hardware store owner, had just had a tumour removed, dark freckles became a point of concern. I had four of my freckles removed and tested for all those wonderful things that life throws at you. The results of the tests on all four biopsies came back negative. Relief. Once again I believed that I was a reasonably healthy guy. Out of the blue, during September 1999, a slight swelling on the right side of my neck began to grow. Being a normal tough guy that I was, I didn’t worry about the swelling as swollen glands are part of growing up. Eventually, after many hours of putting up with a nagging wife, about six weeks later, and having difficulties using a razor to shave with, I made an appointment with our family GP. After a course of very strong antibiotics, everything on my body healed, including my navel, and excluding this lump in my neck, which had grown considerably in size during the previous weeks of treatment. A decision was made to remove the offending bits of swollen gland and send it off for tests. The removal of the lump was scheduled for the 1st of December 1999. The surgical removal of the lump was successful. The story that follows is a result of the lump removed from my neck. I come from a rather large family and I have four brothers and four sisters. For my wife and I to phone everybody with all the different news all the time was proving to be a rather time consuming project and was becoming rather costly. As I have family and friends all around the world, the most convenient form of communicating with everybody at once is email. I maintained a sort of an electronic diary with photo’s for all to see. This worked out quite well as some of my family and friends were involved in the medical services and understood the doctor’s medical jargon rather well, as well as wanting to create my own record. Understanding the medical jargon proved to be quite a life saver. Whenever I needed an explanation on any diagnosis, I would email Jerry in Australia and get an answer in English that we all could understand. The emails that I sent out to family members to keep all informed proved to be quite popular and the list of recipients grew and grew. This is my story of how I survived the diagnosis and the treatment. I have kept the diary as close to the original email format with some explanatory notes accompanying the story. Photos have been inserted into the episodes with notes attached relating to the current happenings relevant to that episode. Some photos have been duplicated purposefully. The last healthy picture before all hell broke loose.

Book Description
In the early church, the phrase ôThe Wayö was synonymous with Christianity itself. In Acts, we read that St. Paul, before his dramatic conversion, persecuted ôanyone who belonged to The Way,ö that is, anyone who was a follower of Jesus. And Jesus himself said these memorable words, ôI am the way, the truth, and the life.ö This book is intended especially for people striving to live their lives by The Way.

Book Description
Mounting failures of replication in social and biological sciences give a new urgency to critically appraising proposed reforms. This book pulls back the cover on disagreements between experts charged with restoring integrity to science. It denies two pervasive views of the role of probability in inference: to assign degrees of belief, and to control error rates in a long run. If statistical consumers are unaware of assumptions behind rival evidence reforms, they can't scrutinize the consequences that affect them (in personalized medicine, psychology, etc.). The book sets sail with a simple tool: if little has been done to rule out flaws in inferring a claim, then it has not passed a severe test. Many methods advocated by data experts do not stand up to severe scrutiny and are in tension with successful strategies for blocking or accounting for cherry picking and selective reporting. Through a series of excursions and exhibits, the philosophy and history of inductive inference come alive. Philosophical tools are put to work to solve problems about science and pseudoscience, induction and falsification.
