Book Description
Excerpt from Pictorial Tour Round India The Object of this book is to give the people of India a better idea of their own beautiful country. For many centuries pilgrims have visited supposed holy places and thus acquired a certain amount of knowledge, while, lately, by means of railways, travelling has been greatly facilitated. Still, few have made the circuit of India; great numbers have never left their native towns; besides, the numerous pictures will be to all a welcome addition to verbal accounts. The course proposed is to make an imaginary journey round the country, noticing some of the principal Objects of interest Several thick volumes would be required to describe every thing that ought to be mentioned. Many important cities and places will therefore be passed over, or only slightly noticed, especially Central India and most of the Deccan. One reason for this is the want of woodcuts, without which descriptions are much less intelligible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from India, Pictorial and Descriptive What is really necessary and desirable is, that the recently-awakened popular interest in India should be confirmed and extended by the difiiu'sion of trustworthy information respecting it. We ought to make the public as well acquainted with its affairs as they are with the affairs of the United Kingdom. We ought to accustom them to look upon it as an integral part of the Empire, to regard its inhabitants as their fellow - subjects, and to quicken in them an anxiety to promote the welfare of the masses of its population. The present volume is a contribution towards this great end. It does not, we admit, touch upon delicate points of religion or education; it does not profess to examine into the condition of the natives, or to adjust their relations towards the Imperial Government: it is, in fact, a book of description, and not of criticism and yet we are willing to hope that its usefulness will be recognized. Book Description
Excerpt from Indian Pictures and Problems A book of travel Sketches must begin somewhere; and, rather than attempt the dreary task of describ ing the long journey from London to Bombay in all its well-known detail, I prefer to choose mid-ocean for my first scene. Travellers may be divided into two categories - those whose chief interest lies in places, and those Whose attention is fixed upon the manners and customs of people. The reader will not have a far journey before he discovers that I belong to the second of these classes. A voyage to India at the end of the leave season has, therefore, much to recommend it to those who think with me. For the others there Is little interest beyond the Suez Canal and the rock of Aden, whereas we have the promenade deck and the smoking-room always with us. No journey that I have ever made surpasses in human interest the passage from Marseilles to Bombay at the beginning of the cold weather, especially if it be undertaken in some vessel of lesser pre tensions than a P. And O. It matters little that, for the first day or two, one feels an utter stranger on board and to some extent lonely that experience soon wears off in the sunshine. Book Description
Excerpt from A Vision of India The materials on which the following pages are founded were collected, for the most part, during the progress of the Prince and Princess of Wales through the Empire of India, which I was permitted to accompany as Special Correspondent of the Standard, in the autumn and winter of 1905 and the spring of the following year. Of this interesting journey much might be written from the personal, the political, and the purely pictorial side. It is not, however, with these matters that I am chiefly con cerned. I deviated rather frequently from the route of the royal travellers, since it was my object to give some general idea of the conditions of life and society prevailing in India, rather than to furnish a circumstantial record of the tour, or to describe in detail those places of historical, antiquarian, and aesthetic interest which were included in the official itinerary. It has been my aim to reproduce something of the impression which our vast and varied dominion of the East - almost a world in itself - leaves on the mind, in its splendour and its contradictions, its colour and its mystery, its wealth and poverty, its medley of classes, creeds, and peoples: to hint at a few of the absorbing problems suggested by the contemplation of this strange and fascinating amalgam. I hope that my survey, partial and incomplete as it may be, will not mislead those who know India only from hearsay and. Book Description
Excerpt from Pictures of Indian Life: Sketched With the Pen From 1852 to 1881 MY object in publishing in a collective form these Pictures is the same, which induced me to write them at different periods during the last quarter of a century, viz., a sincere love for the people of India, and a desire to interest others in them. And what other country has such a multiplicity of interests, extending over such long periods; such magnificent rivers and mountains; such a variety of objects to attract the Antiquarian, the Linguist, the Ethnologist, and the Philanthropist? When those, who have spent years in the country have left it for ever, how much they desire to go back for a few days, to clear up some doubt, to ask some question, to talk to some friend in a language never more to be used! All seems like a dream: the life in the city: the life in the c& the. Vigorous order: the instant obedience; the constant contemplation of the rising sun in the morning ride; the villages: the mountain passes; the ferry across the noble river. And above all, the people, those for whom we laboured, and with whom we laboured. The features of many rise to the recollection, but where are they?
