Book Description
This book contains a selection of lectures given during the 5th International Symposium on Adenosine and Adenine Nucleotides, recently held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Adenosine and Adenine Nucleotides: From Molecular Biology to Integrative Physiology covers a wide range of subjects from molecular and cellular biology to clinical applications. A great emphasis has been placed on cutting edge information derived from studies using molecular and cellular biology techniques applied to the field of adenosine and adenine nucleotide research. The book also includes information on potentially promising developments in the therapeutic applications of adenosine related drugs and ATP. The tradition of past meetings is also maintained by including in the program presentations of new research in the areas of purine metabolism and physiology, and pharmacology of adenosine and adenine nucleotides. Adenosine and Adenine Nucleotides: From Molecular Biology to Integrative Physiology is an excellent, up-to-date reference book for basic and clinical scientists in the field of adenosine and adenine nucleotides.

Book Description
This book, with its 16 chapters, documents the present state of knowledge of the adenosine A receptor. It covers a wide range of information, including data from 3 studies of theoretical, molecular and cellular pharmacology, signal transduction, integrative physiology, new drug discoveries and clinical applications. It fills an important gap in the literature since no alternative source of such information is currently available. Although the A receptor is increasingly being recognized for 3 its increasing number of biological roles throughout the body and many A receptor 3 ligands have proven useful in elucidating peripheral and central pathologies, many issues remain unresolved. Moreover, research activity in this field continues to grow exponentially, resulting in a constant flow of new information. The chapters in this book cover both basic science and the relevant applications and provide an authoritative account of the current status of the field. They have enabled my goal as editor to make “A Adenosine Receptors from Cell Biology to Pharmacology and 3 Therapeutics” an up to date, scientifically excellent, reference source, attractive to basic and clinical scientists alike, a reality. Detailed understanding of the physico-chemical aspects and molecular biology of the A receptor provides a solid basis for its future development as a target for 3 adenosine-based pharmacotherapies (Chapters 2 and 3).

Book Description
Historically, the major emphasis on the study of purinergic systems has been predominantly in the areas of physiology and gross pharmacology. The last decade has seen an exponential in crease in the number of publications related to the role of both adenosine and A TP in mammalian tissue function, a level of interest that has evolved from a more molecular focus on the identity of adenosine and A TP receptor subtypes and the search for selective ligands and development of radioligand binding assays by Fred Bruns and colleagues (especially that for A receptors) that played z a highly significant role in advancing research in the area. In the 60 years since adenosine was first shown to be a potent hypotensive agent, a considerable investment has been made by several pharmaceutical companies-including Abbott, Byk Gulden, Takeda, Warner-LambertlParke Davis, Boehringer Mann heim, Boehringer Ingelheim, Nelson/Whitby Research and CffiA Geigy-as well as John Daly's laboratory at the National Institutes of Health, to design new adenosine receptor ligands, and both agon ists and antagonists with the aim of developing new therapeutic entiities. Numerous research tools have derived from these efforts including: 2-chloroadenosine, R-PIA (~-phenylisopropyladeno sine; NECA (5' N-ethylcarboxamidoadenosine); CV1808; CI936; PD 125,944; ~-benzyladenosine; PACPX; CPX; CPT; XAC; CGS 15943 and CGS 21680. Yet in the realm of therapeutics it was only in 1989 that adenosine itself was approved for human use in the treatment of supraventricular arrythmias.

Book Description
Since their discovery approximately 25 years ago, adenosine receptors have now emerged as important novel molecular targets in disease and drug discovery. These proteins play important roles in the entire spectrum of disease from inflammation to immune suppression. Because of their expression on a number of different cell types and in a number of different organ systems they play important roles in specific diseases, including asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, stroke, cancer, sepsis, and obesity. As a result of intense investigations into understanding the molecular structures and pharmacology of these proteins, new molecules have been synthesized that have high specificity for these proteins and are now entering clinical trials. These molecules will define the next new classes of drugs for a number of diseases with unmet medical needs.
