Health care professionals are at risk for injury on a routine basis due to patient handling. When health care professionals manually handle patients, injuries can occur. In the future, health care professionals will be needed in larger numbers due to a higher volume of patients in the healthcare system. It is imperative that they remain in the workforce to continue to care for an aging nation. There is evidence indicating safe patient handling (SPH) reduces the rate of injury. Although using SPH equipment is widely accepted, barriers exist for consistent use. One reason for not using the equipment is insufficient training. In response to this need, an online educational module and website were created. The teaching was developed with content experts from osteoarthritis research, physical therapy, and nursing. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether physical therapy, health education and exercise play any role in reducing the prevalence of chronic conditions resulting from injuries. In this project the data utilized are from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS). The software used for running statistical analysis was the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 18.0. The aim of the project was also to investigate the association of age, gender, race/ethnicity on injury prevention and how these variables correlate with patients who receive health education about proper postures and those who do not receive them. It was concluded that physical therapy, exercise and health education play a key role in reducing the probability of a patient injuring himself with chronic conditions like low back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. It was also seen that injury prevention measures were more useful in middle-aged patients when compared with younger patients as the mean age of patients getting injured was 47.01 years and the mean age of patients not getting injured was 35.58 years. The biggest limitation of this study was that the data utilized for this study was that of injured patients instead of workers getting injured in the workplace. Another limitation of the study was that the data was cross-sectional and could not be used to determine the causal factors of chronic injuries.
